About Program

This program is open to Vet school students (those currently enrolled in vet school, entering vet school in the fall, or having graduated just before the program begins).

Spend two weeks at an Elephant sanctuary working hands-on with a US elephant vet to learn about elephant medicine and elephant veterinary care. You will have specialized instruction in caring for elephants and assist in providing treatments to elephants each day.

If you want to be a zoo vet or want experience with elephants, this is the rare chance to get experience while learning hands-on in a small group of vet students led by an experienced vet. We will live at the sanctuary. One fun day is included in a local small town, including tourist activities.

Credit and financial aid are available.

Thailand vet college program!

The program gave me the opportunity to realize that working with wildlife is what i want to do in life! Each week was amazing and i learned a lot! Each week was completely different! With the elephants we gave them food, got to treat their wounds and got to do research! We also worked with the dogs from elephant nature park! The second week was at a dog clinic where i got to experience different techniques that would help in the field! We also got to explore the markets in thailand and eat delicious food! The staff and doctors there were pretty amazing and made sure that we were okay and that we learned! I would recommend this program to everybody interested in wildlife animals! Looking forward to participate again until i have been everywhere!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I loved every single part of this program! Which is why i wouldn't change a thing from it!

I had the BEST time

Going on this trip was an AMAZING experience! Being able to live/ understand a different culture was eye opening. I learned so much about elephants; the information I have now, I am able to relay to others and spread awareness. I am grateful to have gone on this trip, I recommend that anyone who is on the fence about going... JUST GO! The class was great. Working with the elephants was a fun time. We had so many opportunities to be hands on with the elephants. Once Dr. Erica taught us something, she let us have at it, which was great!

What would you improve about this program?
I would recommend changing anything about the program.

2 Weeks with the Elephants

I had an amazing time while living in the backyard of more than twenty elephants. We were able to learn how to provide adequate veterinary services to these animals, a species we do not talk about very often in our classes at veterinary school. We were able to have hands-on time to treat wounds, take blood samples, deworm all of the elephants and more! It was not all work with no play either. We had time to float down the river, visit some of the local attractions, and spend an afternoon at a night market. I miss the elephants and Thailand very much and hope to go back to see them soon.

What would you improve about this program?
To improve this program, I would decrease the size of the group that is traveling and integrate the classroom lessons into more of the day time. We were all pretty tired in the afternoons after a long day of treating the elephants.
