The University of Bristol is one of the most amazing universities. I had the privilege of studying abroad there for a year and was continuously surprised at its constant support and guidance for its students. Housing was wonderful, as you get to choose your preferences, choosing classes was also a great experience. Being able to decide which courses to take makes your time at the university that much more special. I met some amazing people and developed close relationships with many of my professors. As a Sociology major, I took the majority of my courses in that subject. I was ecstatic with the material I learned and the topics that were covered. There is a lot of freedom in choosing what interests you, which is something I appreciated. I wish there was a way to stay longer!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?

The most nerve-racking thing was transitioning to a different university, but also not knowing your flat mates! However, everyone at the university was amazingly helpful and I lucked out with some forever friends who were my flat mates!

What is your favorite travel memory?

Summoning up the courage to knock on the door of the house in northern Chile, where my grandmother was born, and explaining in shaky Spanish why I was there. The family who lived there were so warm and welcoming - they showed me around the house, offered me coffee and biscuits and seemed to understand why it meant so much to me to be there.

Did you study abroad in school? If not, what inspired you to work in international education?

Before and during my degree I spent time in Chile, Mexico and Brazil. Forgive the cliché, but I can only describe the experience in each place as life-changing. I learnt about myself, gained confidence and discovered a passion for Latin American cultures and languages. My time abroad has massively influenced my career choices.

What is the best story you've heard from a student who is studying abroad at your university?

I've heard lots of positive stories and it's hard to pick just one, but a common factor seems to be that students with the best stories are the ones who get involved in extra-curricular activities at Bristol. They meet people who share their interests, sometimes get to travel with a sports team, or get to see a different side of the city through volunteering.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in creating an excellent experience for study abroad students?

Being available and being able to respond quickly is important, and study abroad students who've been at Bristol have said how much they appreciated this in our team. We have an open door policy and if a student ever has a problem, we are there to step in and help or advise.
