About

Known for its biodiversity, economic reform and growth, democracy, and famous natural landmarks like Victoria Falls, Zambia is the perfect non-traditional study abroad location for students interested in development and environmental issues.

Bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, Zambia is a great location to explore the origins of many forms of life, while learning about the history of the Bantu Empires and European influences.

Program Types

Faculty Led Programs

While in college, students can participate in a faculty-led program in Zambia. These programs are completely dependent on what the university faculty and staff want and usually range from one week to two months. These short term programs are available for students in diverse fields including nursing, anthropology, African studies, music, and performing arts.

Multi-Country Travel Programs

If you are itching to see other parts of Africa, enrolling in an immersive multi-country travel program with a theme-based academic component might be just what you're looking for. What sets these programs apart from regular travel is that your program will connect you with people in the communities you visit, so you could see their world through their eyes rather than the eyes of an outsider. Some nearby countries students may get to travel to include Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, and South Africa, to name a few.

Housing

During a short term faculty led program in Zambia, students can plan to stay in hotels, hostels, guest houses, and even in tents during camping excursions.

Visas

Prior to entering Zambia, students must have a valid passport that will be good for at least six months after the intended departure date, as well as a visa. Visas can be acquired at the airport for an additional charge of $50, and are only valid for 3 months.

Costs

The official currency in Zambia is the Kwacha. Most restaurants add a 10% service charge, and because tourism is a significant source of income for many people, it is suggested that travelers tip when they receive good service.

Costs vary depending on the duration of the program, but generally students can plan to spend between $2,000-$5,000 including some meals and housing. Some program providers will even include airfare in this cost as well.

Health & Safety

Health

Prior to entering Zambia it is recommended that travelers get vaccinated for Yellow fever, Cholera, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, Tuberculosis, Polio, Rabies, and Meningococcal.

Safety

The Department of State advises that travelers avoid political protests that take place throughout the country, specifically in Lusaka, the capital city. Most places are generally safe during the day, but theft sometimes occurs at night in popular cities such as Livingstone and Lusaka. We recommend that travelers remain vigilant of their surroundings, and make copies of their passport and credit cards.
