Teaching in Yangshuo

Had an amazing six weeks teaching in Yangshuo. Would whole heartedly recommend to anyone wanting to get some teaching experience in the summer whilst travelling. China is a beautiful and diverse country and it was beautiful to be fully integrated into a community and be able to get to know kids for six weeks and see not only their English improve but also their confidence. This is a great chance to see how teaching works in different parts of the world.

Travel, Teach, and Have Fun

I was made aware of Gotoco through my university, and so I sent their quick application form. Most of the process of learning more about the trip and acquiring the necessary documents proved automatic and simple to do on the Gotoco website. However, some parts of the process were more difficult than others, such as using a visa application service and acquiring traveler's insurance. The other volunteers at my program said that email correspondence should have been faster, but I had no issues working my way through the online forms on the Gotoco website. I got my visa, travel tips, and a six week program in China all thanks to Gotoco, and I recommend them to anyone who is interested in travel, teaching, and growing professionally or personally.

A couple of hiccups but mostly smooth

Despite some complications during the visa application process, and very little support from staff on site, the programme was very enjoyable, and I would definitely say that being put in at the deep end was a good technique to improve my teaching abilities.
The children were always keen and ready to learn, and the assistants we were given (who were students at the school during term time in their early teens) were really helpful and desirous of our praise alongside our own students.
The support amongst the higher leadership team, however, was quite minimal- especially considering our zero prior experience of teaching.

How can this program be improved?
The support and assistance process should be a lot more efficient- especially considering the age of applicants which could mean it is their first time abroad, let alone in Asia

Meten English Camp 3 week program in Shenzhen

Had an amazing time in Shenzhen, China, teaching English to both adults and kids.
Although my dates were difficult to manage and did not allow for a lot of flexibility, Gotoco still managed to find me a program and made sure I had plenty to do to fulfill my TEFL hours. I taught adult classes in the Meten English camps a few hours on weekdays and fulltime on the weekends, and volunteered at a kindergarten the rest of my working hours.
Gotoco also partnered me up with a host family, which was so valuable in terms of my language learning and culture experience.
Overall, the program was incredible in terms of how much it has taught me and how much I have benefitted from it. Teaching English in a place like China is such an interesting and valuable experience, and what Gotoco offers is at once professional and affordable which is quite rare to find.

Amazing volunteering experience

My volunteering experience in China was one of the best summers I have ever had. I was based in Yunnan, in an adventure summer camp, where I taught English and supervised activities. The Gotoco staff and the staff from Keystone Adventures were so friendly and helpful. My trip to Yangshuo, which Gotoco kindly provides free accommodation, was brilliant and I met so many other interesting and amazing volunteers.

Life-changing opportunity

The chance to not only visit China but meet regular Chinese people and live like a local is a once in a lifetime opportunity and something that should not be missed out. Because of this unique experience, visiting China through the Gotoco programme is arguably more exciting than visiting simply as a tourist. Furthermore, the experience improves old and gives unique new skills to participants. Increased cultural intelligence, interpersonal communication and child education skills are just some examples. The TEFL certificate is another appealing aspect of the programme.

Great summer teaching English in Yangshuo, China

Had the best 6 weeks teaching in Yangshuo - met some great people who are all likeminded and all up for a challenge, beautiful place to be and learnt a lot about myself due to being pushed in at the deep end and expected to teach. Yes, a fair amount is expected of you but for people who love a challenge and experiencing new cultures and travel I would highly recommend; also an easy way of seeing some of China! If you want to try something completely different and something that will make you stand out on your CV then apply!!!

Good Fun

Yeah I had a good time in China. I met lots of interesting people and had an experience I could not have had otherwise in my life. The food was nice and the alcohol was cheap. I must warn you that there is quite a big language barrier and that that can cause some problems. Teaching is great fun and a useful experience. I travelled with a friend which definitely made it more enjoyable. Thank you gotoco.

Great summer experience in Beijing

Gotoco placed me with a summer camp in Beijing where I was able to explore the city and work with 4-7 year old children. My stay and food were covered by the program, without me having to pay any fees. I worked for four weeks at IDEAS camp Beijing, where I had been placed by Gotoco. The workdays there were long, and the commute to the school took over an hour, but the work was also sometimes very rewarding. The biggest challenge was probably that not everyone at the actual camp could or wanted to speak English, however the staff at Gotoco all did and were incredibly friendly and helpful. Altogether, Gotoco allowed me to spend a whole month in China and helped me with the visa application process and provided support throughout.

Emma’s China experience

I had a fantastic summer in China, at IDEAS camp, Changshu. I was able to build on existing communication skills and develop new ones as a result of being exposed to so many new experiences. My time with the campers was extremely rewarding and I was not only able to teach, but learn about myself in process. The camp brought various counsellors from all over the globe together, it was a great opportunity to share and learn about a variety of cultures. Although the work could be full-on at times, being around fabulous people in a completely new country made it all worthwhile. I would definitely recommend the experience.

Amazing summer

I had an amazing summer - this is a great way to learn so much about the Chinese culture in a way that also helps you to develop your own skills! It's not an 'easy' ride, you really do have to teach classes from the very beginning, but if you're ready for a personal and professional challenge then I would 100% recommend this programme. Living with a host family was a great way to learn more about the local culture whilst still living comfortably. I guess it's a lottery with where you get placed, but ultimately I really enjoyed my placement and met some great people out there too.

Very rewarding - go for it!

Good experience!

The overall experience benefited me in a few ways. For one, I was able to be in touch with China. Although I was born in China, I was never able to explore China as much as I'd liked to. However, living in China for the past few weeks and working with local teachers and students, I really got to understand China in a deeper level. For example, I asked about the day-to-day lives of the locals, what they enjoyed doing, how the economy was working out for them, and so much more. Not only that, I met many friends who would be my lifelong contacts. Because they were mature individuals who could provide me new perspectives in life as well. Lastly, the teaching experience challenged me to try out new teaching methods and materials that would benefit students learning a new language. To conclude, I had a great experience working in China.

How can this program be improved?
I do recommend Gotoco to a friend. Because Gotoco made the whole process of volunteer abroad smooth and easy. The only downside was BOB wasn't too organized in terms of what class levels we would get training in and what classes we were actually teaching. If they could improve on that, it would be great!

Amazing experience

This project provides an amazing opportunity to immerse in Chinese culture, meet wonderful people and gain valuable work experience. A huge advantage of this project is a fact that it is free of charge and the only fees I had to cover were travel expenses. Even inexperienced person is more than welcomed to join the project, which is great news for any young volunteer that does not have any work experience yet. I would definitely recommend this program.

Good experience

Gotoco is a good way to gain teaching experience and the TEFL certificate. I enjoyed meeting the other volunteers and the children. We had weekends off and so were able to explore the local area. However I thought that there could be better communication between the programme leader and the volunteers, as there were some changes made to the programme and we weren't aware of this until one week into the programme. Overall good experience.

How can this program be improved?
