Nepal is an adventure traveler's dream! It's home to some of the highest mountains in the world, including a little one that you might have heard of, called Mount Everest.

But the country's appeal doesn't stop with mountain climbing and trekking. There are fascinating and diverse ancient cultures to explore, unspoiled rivers to paddle, steamy jungles for safaris, some of the best paragliding in the world, tea estates to amble through... Although Nepal is relatively small in terms of size, many visitors find that one trip isn't enough, and end up going back for more.

A major bonus for international travelers is that Nepal is very cheap. You can hire a guide, join expeditions, and eat and sleep well for much less than in other places. So, what are you waiting for?

Trekking

Trekking in Nepal is as good as it gets: huge mountains, beautiful landscapes, a comfortable climate, good infrastructure, and affordable guides, accommodation, and food. From short two-day walks near the cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara to epic month-long expeditions, there's something for every fitness level, budget, season, and interest.

The most famous trekking routes are the Everest Base Camp trek and the Annapurna Circuit. They're popular for good reason, but in peak season can get a bit crowded. If you want a more off-the-beaten-path trek, there are numerous trails throughout the country that see few visitors. It's always a good idea to hire a guide, however, for safety reasons and to ensure you get the most out of the experience.

White Water Rafting & Kayaking

Nepal has many long, clean rivers flanked with lovely beaches, plus a generally warm climate. These conditions make multi-day river trips a top activity in Nepal. You ride a raft or kayak by day, and camp out at night. Trips as long as 12 days are possible, although day trips or 2-3 days trips are also possible.

Nepal is also a good place to learn to white-water kayak. Kayak clinics run for 3-7 days, mainly on the Trisuli and Bhote Kosi Rivers, near Kathmandu. Absolute beginners and more advanced kayakers are both catered to.

Jungle Safaris

It's perhaps less well known that this country of towering mountains is also home to steamy tropical jungles. The plains area bordering India -- called the Terai -- has a couple of beautiful national parks that are excellent for bird and wildlife spotting. At the Chitwan National Park you're practically guaranteed to see rhinoceros, and at the Bardia National Park it's possible to see Royal Bengal tigers.

Safaris in these parks can be done via Jeep, on foot, or by boat.

Health

Nepal is a developing country so food and water hygiene are not as good as in many Western countries. Make sure all your immunizations are up-to-date, especially hepatitis, tetanus, and typhoid. It's a good idea to travel with basic stomach and pain medications when traveling in remote areas.

Good clinics operate in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but medical facilities are few and far between in remote areas. Helicopter evacuation is often the only option if you get into an accident while in the mountains.

When purchasing travel insurance, make sure your policy covers emergency helicopter evacuation and travel at high altitudes if you're planning on trekking, or adventure activities like rafting and paragliding. Many policies do, but you have to select them especially and perhaps even pay a slightly higher premium.

Safety

Nepal is a very safe country, and violent (or even petty) crime against foreigners is rare. It's a particularly popular Asian destination for women travelers, because of the friendliness and helpfulness of the Nepali people. However, accidents and disappearances do periodically make it into the news, usually involving solo trekkers in remote areas. Never trek alone. Solo women, if you don't fancy hiring a male guide, there are companies that can provide female guides.

Kathmandu and Pokhara are very safe cities on the whole, but take the same precautions as you would anywhere: don't flash your valuables about, avoid anywhere that feels shady after dark, and avoid dodgy characters offering you marijuana (it will happen!)
