About Program

It’s a tradition of Buddhism to send their children to a Monastery to become monks or nuns. Their level of English is very poor compared to other school children. Most of them are from poor families throughout Nepal. There are about 130 monks in the Monastery ranging between 4 and 18 years old. Most of the parents send their children to the Monastery because of better living conditions and education.

Volunteers will get the opportunity to teach English to the children. You will work under the supervision of monastery teachers/administrators and get memorable experiences. Volunteers can participate in various activities that occurr within the Monastery.

Note: Volunteers can bring anything that aids the teaching like books, picture books, maps etc and make their teaching more creative and interesting. It is recommended that all the volunteers take Nepali language class which helps communication during the placement with the staff and the students.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with A Broader View Volunteers Corp for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Monk Monastery Nepal

Volunteering at the Monastery in Nepal Kathmandu was a beautiful experience. I had never taught before, but after a while it felt very natural. This is something I think everyone will benefit from if given the chance. The local coordinator and his family were very welcoming and kind. He was able to provide me with information about anything I needed to know about. He checked up on me everyday asking how I was and if I needed any help. Both he and his family made me feel at home and were very welcoming. I will cherish the memories of this trip for years to come. From teaching, hiking, to meditating it was all very soulful and I feel much different after this trips. Hoping to come back again.
