The majority of the placements in New Zealand are based in schools. Every single school in NZ is different in terms of the duties they ask their volunteers to perform; they may include helping to support pupils in the classroom, being linked to a specific department e.g. art, drama, PE, extracurricular activities, and/or assisting in administrative duties in the school office. Volunteers in boarding school placements are expected to be involved in house duties such as getting boarders up, helping with after school activities and homework, supervising going to bed, as well as weekend excursions.
Some placements are located in Outdoor Education camps where volunteers act as camp counsellors. Duties include assisting groups of young campers with various skills and activities, such as rope-climbing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, camping, archery etc. Some experience and skill in these activities is needed.
