This is a unique volunteering project in that your contribution as a volunteer is three-fold: your volunteering assists with construction and renovation tasks, your fees help to pay for materials, and the end product can then be used to host other important community projects. One of the most eye-opening experiences I've ever had

Volunteering in Cusco through this medical program was one of the most eye-opening experiences I've ever had. I was placed in a nursing home, where I supported the elderly with daily activities like feeding, conversation, and general care. Most of the staff and residents spoke only Spanish, so I definitely recommend brushing up on the language beforehand or taking classes while you're there.

The first few days were a bit overwhelming as I adjusted to the setting and the language barrier, but it quickly became incredibly rewarding. The Local Team was supportive throughout and made sure we understood the impact we were making. It was clear every day that our presence mattered, and I’ll always remember the small but powerful moments of connection with the residents. If you go in with a humble attitude and a true desire to help, you'll get so much out of this experience.

Amazing Time in Cusco Peru

I had an amazing time in Peru. IVHQ organized all my accommodations, volunteering, and Spanish lessons for me. I was in a really nice homestay with other very friendly volunteers. And the location was right next to Cusco's town center and the local program headquarters. Volunteering was enriching and I got a lot of independence to teach my students how I saw fit. On the weekends I booked many trips through IVHQ add-ons. All of the locations and activities were beautiful and fun. This experience opened my eyes to an amazing culture I've never experienced before and taught me how to be a better teacher. 10/10 would do again.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Guinea Pig! (Known as Cuy in Spanish). It is a very common local dish in Cusco, Peru. Tasted a bit like chicken. Very fun and interesting experience.
Pros
  • Great food
  • Great students (for teaching English)
  • Great volunteers which became my friends :)
Cons
  • Not much info given to you before you arrive
  • The time for my daily Spanish lessons was chosen for me
  • Lima airport on the way to Cusco is a stressful experience

Volunteering in Cusco

The support from the local team and my field worker was exceptional. The office staff were always friendly and helpful with resources, ideas and activities for the volunteers. The Homestay was clean, friendly and ideally situated.

I fell ill within the first few days of arrival, and needed hospital and close monitoring. From the moment I called my fieldworker, she moved me to their preferred Clinic which resulted in top standard care with an English speaking doctor. She was always checking in on me to ensure I was happy and getting the best care.

I would highly recommend this volunteer organisation and also the Travel Insurance they suggest.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go with the travel insurance they recommend - covered everything and was such high standard when I fell ill in the country
Pros
  • Great local team support
  • Perfect Homestay experience
  • Lots of excellent activities organised by the local team
Cons
  • Altitude was a challenge
  • Not speaking Spanish hindered me in the classroom

Go to Peru!

I loved my experience in Peru. My coordinator and local team were constantly helpful and gave me all of the support I needed. Traveling to a foreign country is scary, yet they helped me feel constantly safe. I loved helping in a local womens and childrens shelter and soup kitchen. We helped prepare meals for the very poor in a part of Lima. We also helped take care of children as their parents were fleeing dangerous situations. They loved playing "Just dance" and other games. I would love to go again and stay longer!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Guinea Pig!
Pros
  • The ongoing projects are meaningful to the community
  • Great food for the volunteers
  • You will get to know many local people.
Cons
  • The area has so much need. It is hard to complete enough in a short time.

Wonderful experience!

I loved my experience volunteering with a local family near Cusco, Peru! This was my second experience with IVHQ, my first was in 2019 teaching English in Romania. They were both wonderful experiences. The local programs and teams are super nice, supportive, and helpful. I would definitely recommend IVHQ to anyone looking for a volunteer experience abroad. The experience I had in Peru was very different and I enjoyed the challenge of being completely immersed in a new culture and lifestyle. My host family was absolutely wonderful!

Pros
  • Cultural immersion
  • Improved my Spanish
  • Learned some history

IVHQ- Great Program

I really enjoyed volunteering through IVHQ- I felt that they properly prepare and train volunteers, and set us up with great local teams in our host countries. I spent 3 weeks in Cusco, Peru, volunteering at a childcare program with my best friend from college, so it is also a great program to do if you are a solo traveler or traveling in a smaller group. Overall it was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to do another program with them! Could not recommend IVHQ enough, especially to younger travelers!

An Unforgettable Experience

Being able to give back with no strings attached was a truly beautiful feeling seeing all those grateful for our services. this unique experience also gave me a chance to really learn and connect with the culture as I was safely able to live amongst the locals. Everything was organized from the beginning and there was always access to communication for any concerns. This is a perfect trip to go solo or with friends as you meet many interesting people from all walks of life. I had an amazing time and will definitely be doing another mission through IVHQ.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would book for a longer amount of time. I only booked for five days and after the first one I already knew I didn't want to leave so soon.
Pros
  • worksite placement varied so it wasn't just helping one affected community
  • gave ample time to explore nearby cities and local culture
  • easy access to coordinators to help with any potential issues

Fantastic experience

It was my first experience with this organization and I have only good reviews about the professionalism and encouragement they provide. From the beginning of filling out the application to returning back to Canada, the local team followed through on everything.

The local team was accommodating and very well organized. The programs we were fortunate to be part of were rewarding and shared communication even with language barriers.

Cuzco is an amazing city and the residents are friendly and helpful.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Volunteering in the one institute with seniors. It was so rewarding.
Pros
  • Sites
  • Showing up each day with no expectations
  • Learning spanish

Questions & Answers

Yeah! I actually got there earlier than the program started and went out in Lima on my own. During the program, yes we went out to different bars/discotecas. During the week, however, we had a curfew of 11pm.

There was a wide range of ages! I think you have to be 18 to do this program, and we had 18 year olds, people in their 20s, and we had one or two people in their late 20s/early 30s.

Yes, we can accommodate families on our volunteer programs and our local team can make arrangements to ensure you are accommodated and placed on a project together. To apply to volunteer abroad as a family, one person needs to complete the application process first and select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Will you be volunteering with a friend, family member or group?’ within the application form. Hi Laurie, according to the IVHQ website, "Volunteers in Lima are accommodated with other volunteers, in either avolunteer house run by a the local coordinator's family or in a homestay." "Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner)." I did an IVHQ program myself and both of those were included in the program.
