About Program

Become part of a lifesaving journey for young baboons in South Africa. Rescue, nurture and rehabilitate injured and orphaned primate babies, helping these young to become strong and part of a family, ready for release to the wild.

Each day you will be helping with the food preparation, feeding, watering and cleaning of enclosures for baboons at different stages of rehabilitation.

You will be living at the rehabilitation centre on the fringes of the great Kruger National Park, alongside the 400 baboons (and other volunteers!).

Impact

Oyster Worldwide is passionate about the importance of responsible travel. We want our projects to fit in with the local way of life, without having a negative impact on the environment, culture or economy. This means that we will only send participants to places where there is a real need and where we have been asked to work. Once there, they should fit in with the community, respecting their way of life and supporting, rather than taking, local jobs.

Program Highlights

  • Work hard to prepare food and clean the monkey enclosures, all with the reward that one day these primates will be released back to the wild.
  • Make a genuine contribution in monkey conservation, helping to release primates back to the wild after injury.
  • Explore the area of South Africa close to the Kruger National Park - you might even get to see the Big 5!

Popular Programs

Game ranger observation

This is an amazing opportunity to take part in an 8 week long game ranger course that will ultimately lead to you gaining the valued FGASA Apprentice Field Guide certificate.

You will be living in the heart of the African wilderness on an exclusive, private game reserve. You will be tracking Africa’s ‘Big 5’ alongside many other species of wildlife, and becoming involved with the primary focus on conservation. Tasks will include planting trees and patrolling trail walks and fences.

Shark in water

This project is essential for educating people about the misunderstood Great White Shark. Between June and December, you can also volunteer with whales. Spend your days on the open ocean taking part in conservation expeditions to contribute to the welfare of these magnificent animals.

You’ll be monitoring and observing behavior through cage dives and from the boats. You will help with groups of tourists, operate equipment, record data, and more.

African wildlife

This is a fantastic opportunity for animal enthusiasts to work alongside vets and wildlife experts on a lush game reserve in South Africa. The experience is highly practical but with useful theoretical knowledge included. It is ideally set up for those wanting some unique work experience before going to study. You will focus on two main areas; learning how the dynamics of the game reserve work and the role of the vet.
