Alumni Spotlight: Lily Valentin

When did you study abroad in Barcelona?

Lily: Spring semester 2011.

Why did you decide to study abroad with API in Spain?

Lily: I knew about API through my study abroad counselor at UMass Amherst and did additional research online. I was really attracted to API because I would have the opportunity to attend a real Spanish university and be able to take classes with Spanish students. I also really liked the different housing options and excursions they offered. Additionally, the program was reasonably priced. I certainly feel the program was well worth it.

Tell us about a highlight from your experience in Spain.

Lily: A major highlight was being able to make Spanish friends. I really enjoyed spending time with people who are my age, share similar interests and goals, but have different backgrounds. I had a goal to make local friends and when I left, I knew I had accomplished it.

Three things you now wish you knew before studying abroad.

#1. I wish I knew how to access more local papers or event calendars to know what local events/ festivals were happening in Barcelona.
#2. Wish I learned how to use Google voice at the beginning of my trip—I would've saved a lot of money.
#3. I don't know if this is about knowing but I wish I would've been better prepared for the reverse culture shock I experienced when I came back to the states.
