Why did you decide to study abroad with API in Bilbao, Spain?
Rachel: I was researching places in Spain to go study, and I came across Bilbao. It stood out to me more than any of the other cities for so many reasons. FIrst, I really wanted to go somewhere that was not very touristy (especially going in the summer time) so that I could really focus on learning/speaking as much Spanish as possible! Second, I loved that Bilbao had beautiful foothills surrounding the city, la ría that ran through the middle, and beaches near by! Also, the fact that there was lots of outdoor activities to do, which I love caught my attention. API was the only program that offered a summer program in Bilbao!
What made studying abroad a unique and special experience?
Rachel: The thing that probably made my experience unique and very special was my host mom! She made my whole experience so rich and so memorable, I really feel like she is a part of my family and still keep in touch with her! She was so patient with me when I first arrived and my Spanish was not in very top notch shape at the time, but she didn't give up on me and even though she knew some English she made me do and say everything in Spanish and she as well in return! I don't think my experience abroad would have been so special and life changing if it weren't for her. I learned and experienced things, that I could have never imagined or done if I had not lived with her!
How has this experience impacted your future?
Rachel: Personally, I am a changed person! I am more confident and independent, and I now realize I can do anything I set my mind to and I can conquer any fear I have! As for my Spanish, it has improved so much, as well as my pronunciation of words! I am graduating in December and I just want to travel!
I am looking for jobs with anything that has to do with abroad, teaching English, mentoring kids about the abroad experienced, anything! I have caught the travel bug and I am determined to go overseas again to explore and learn about other cultures and people, it is a newly found rich passion of mine!
