Alumni Spotlight: Ashley Steinberg

Ashley studied abroad in London.

Why did you decide to study abroad with CAPA in London?

Ashley: I liked that CAPA offered so many opportunities to travel and explore. They include a lot in their package, like free Oyster cards (like metrocards but for the tube in London), several trips that are incorporated into your classes and even a weekly food stipend. I also enjoyed the option of being able to do an internship if I chose to.

What made this study abroad experience so unique and special?

Ashley: This experience was unique because of my immersion in the actual culture. Because of CAPA's affiliation with Imperial college, I was able to get in touch with my religious affiliations there and attend many of their events. I found people with similar interests to myself and they showed me parts of London that I would not have seen had I gone exploring on my own. Meeting locals was a way for me to get both the American, tourist-type stuff out of the way, as well as seeing a London that many others probably have not.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Ashley: I think that it looks good on any resume for someone to say that they studied abroad. Employers like to know that a person is worldly and has had experience being independent in a new place. It shows that one can handle herself in uncomfortable situations. This program also offers a Record of Achievement award which recognizes a student's incredible efforts in the country and can be added to a professional resume to help make her stand out. I received an award of this type for community involvement and volunteering.

What is one piece of advice you would give someone considering studying abroad in London?

Ashley: Take all of the other advice from everyone else, but be open-minded and realize it may or may not be that way for you. I was advised to be formal and orderly when (at my particular job) I did not need to be formal with everyone and a little chaos was a part of the job.
