Alumni Spotlight: Lindsay Walker

Why did you decide to study abroad with CAPA in London?

Lindsay studied abroad in London with CAPA

Lindsay: I have always wanted to study abroad in London but was looking for the right program for me. I was initially drawn to CAPA for the chance to participate in an international internship, which most programs don’t offer. I also loved the idea of going to a foreign country with Americans from all over the country so we could have some familiarity in a new place and live internationally with others experiencing everything for the first time.

What made this study abroad experience so unique and special?

Lindsay: What truly made this experience unique and special, besides the amazing opportunity to travel and make lifelong friends, was the CAPA staff. It was really comforting to know that I had a support system if I had a problem or a question, which I definitely did over the course of the semester. They were always friendly and worked hard to place us all in safe housing and great internships. They also put together free or discounted activities that helped us all immerse ourselves in British culture that we might not have had the chance to do otherwise. Without the CAPA staff, I might not have gotten to see a football match or take a trip to Bath and Stonehenge, which were highlights of my trip.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Lindsay: Studying abroad has completely changed my worldview. I am much more appreciative of the country I live in and have a better idea of how big the world really is. Personally, I became much more independent and self-confident after living and travelling on my own for the first time. Having the opportunity to intern abroad helped me realize what I want in my place of work and pointed me in the right direction career-wise. I also picked up a love for travel and can’t wait to see the rest of the world now.

What is one piece of advice you would give someone considering studying abroad in London?

Lindsay: I would tell anyone planning to study abroad to go into the experience with a completely open mind. The experience can be scary at first but embrace every opportunity offered to you – do things you wouldn’t normally do at home and try to step outside your comfort zone as much as possible. The things you don’t plan are often the best parts of your trip and you will get so much more from the experience.
