What's new in Berlin?!

Dear seekers of professional adventure,
I dedicate this message to those curious, brave and self-confident guys, who has already made one step forward to your journey for internship abroad.
I am Nataliya, from Ukraine, a 3rd year NanoFar PhD student in France and Spain. I had an opportunity to make my professional internship in other country and gain more experience. I knew I want to try German lab and life experience as well.
My PhD project is related to the development of a new complex approach for Rheumatoid arthritis treatment, so I continued to discover more about autoimmune diseases, I had fantastic time at the German lab, handling mice: work in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo testing anti-inflammatory drugs of the new generation.
Go and check what Berlin is preparing for you!

What would you improve about this program?
No complains, just continue to grow up working more on the development and covering of new fields of Natural Sciences, etc.

A Summer of Change

I participated in the Cultural Vistas Internship Program in Germany during the summer of 2015. To improve my German I took one month of classes at a language school in Berlin. I then spent the next to months in a very exciting internship with Fields GmbH. My internship experience was everything I expected and more. Not only didn't I improve my German proficiency and increase my work experience, but I also made so many German friends and professional connections. I was very nervous before going on the program, but the support staff at Cultural Vistas helped me through the entire process. They also made sure to create events for networking and connecting with other participants. Throughout my experience I truly felt the support of Cultural Vistas and I am happy to say my life has changed dramatically since my time abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
The one thing I would change is more days of orientation. The orientation was informational but seemed a little short for my liking. I would have liked to have more time with the staff and other participants in Berlin in the beginning.

Friendships in Argentina

I went to Buenos Aires in 2013 through the cultural vistas fellowship. There countless opportunities to make friends throughout the program. I became good friends with my roommate and fellow cultural vistas fellow. I was welcomed into the friend group of my "host mom's" son. My coworkers at my internship were unbelievably friendly and welcoming. And I found friends with a common interest in Buenos Aires's ultimate frisbee community. I'll never forget the relationships that the fellowship helped me develop.

Cultural VIstas can help you further your education and experience.

I was fortunate enough to travel abroad to Germany with the help of Cultural Vistas. They provided accommodations, insurance providers, and a language course when I first arrived in Berlin. They also arranged an internship with a world renowned research institution that I would otherwise not have the opportunity to work with. Overall the experience is a huge step forward in my academic experience and I would suggest it to everyone.

What would you improve about this program?
An introduction upon arrival of new students or participants in your program would be useful. This is not a huge remark.
Response from Cultural Vistas

Thanks so much for your note, Ross.

We're so glad to hear you had an enjoyable experience!

All was great despite no job placement

The cultural vistas team was extremely insightful and supportive through my unique, eventful experience abroad.

My initial offer was abruptly withdrawn, throwing myself and my CV advisors into a state of confusion. My initial travel dates were postponed while the search continued.

They easily arranged my language school courses and continued to offer advice and support until the hard deadline had passed.

Although I was unable to secure an internship, all of the other processes involved were run well and amazing.

What would you improve about this program?
There was a sense of ambiguity on how much of the internship searching process was through them compared then through the applicant.
Response from Cultural Vistas

Despite some of the obstacles that we encountered together, we're glad to see that overall you had a very positive experience.

Providing customized placements is never an exact science and we're glad that things worked out in the end.

A positive attitude goes a long way :)

Amazing Experience in Spain

I spent 12 weeks in Madrid, Spain through Cultural Vistas and loved every moment of it. The interview process was not very overwhelming as only about ten minutes of the 30 minute interview was in Spanish. They really take into account what you want to do in your internship to find a good placement for you. I really liked that I didn't have to find the internship myself. My work day was only five hours, five days a week, so I had plenty of time to explore the sites in Madrid. Cultural Vistas also put me in contact with the other students from my university that would be in Madrid so we could discuss housing. They don't help with housing in Spain, but they do for Chile and Argentina. I also really liked how they put us in touch with a Spanish woman when we arrived so she could talk to us about the culture and what to expect.

What would you improve about this program?
It would have been helpful if they had help to find housing for Spain.

Fantastic Program - definitely recommend

Cultural Vistas is a great program for students looking to spend a summer abroad in Spain who have an interest in an internship and growing both personally and professionally. The program walks you through every step of the way, helping you find an internship and prepare for your summer abroad.

Once you arrive, your country representative will greet you and in my experience, she was super helpful and willing to help us out however she could. She was able to help me find an internship related to my academic and career interests, where I worked during the week. During the weekends, I would often travel to other places with friends and flatmates. I would recommend that you follow the advice of Cultural Vistas and wait to sign a lease for your summer until you arrive.

Overall, this was an amazing experience that I would totally recommend. You will have so much fun and gain a lot of valuable experience.

Loved Germany but this Program…

Although I greatly enjoyed my experience at my internship, Cultural Vistas was not very helpful during the process. They find your internship for you, but mine was not relevant to my university work or future careers. I also struggled to find housing. They did not adequately assist with this search. I encourage you to intern abroad, though!

Response from Cultural Vistas

Megan,
We are sorry to hear about your mixed experience.

Securing customized internship placements that fit one's exact career aspirations is never an exact science - particularly in an international environment.

There are always a lot of moving parts, including the company's specific needs and capacity for hosting an intern.

Sometimes the downside we encounter in providing personalized experiences is that obstacles can crop up when matching individuals to appropriate hosts.

For that reason, we always try to be upfront with our participants about what to expect and how best to manage their expectations.

All things aside, we are glad that this experience showed you the value of interning abroad.

Interning Abroad

I was excited to travel to Europe for the first time, and it really was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed the community, friendship, support and mentorship of my supervisor. I also got some time to travel to other countries (sharing God's word) and meeting lots of people.

What would you improve about this program?
I think the joint meetings held for trainees from across Europe could have been tuned towards sharing of experiences, fun adventures, personal development programs etc. These activities would be more profitable to the participants than partying and youthful exuberant behaviors.
