A Legacy Begins

Little did I know that back in 1997, the year that I was born, a legacy would begin as my cousin attended Salzburg College. Flash forward 20 years and I am making the decision to study abroad. After researching program opportunities in various countries I chose Salzburg College the heart of Europe. Not only could I travel to various cities by train in two hours such as Munich, Vienna, and Innsbrook, but I would also call Salzburg, the beautiful city with a river nestled between the mountains, home. Once I arrived, I knew why my cousin had decided to attend here so many years ago. I understood his recommendation when he said “the only way you'll understand how great Salzburg is, is if you go.” A semester of living and learning abroad is filled with so many experiences it can be difficult to pinpoint just one. I remember looking through reviews and pictures trying to fully grasp what the experience of studying abroad would be like before I went. Although I gathered plenty of information before leaving, it still didn't paint a clear picture of what exactly I was getting into only that it would be a time of my life that I would never regret and would be oh so good! You can't always prepare yourself for life. Sometimes you just have to jump in! I learned that through my semester. I made the trip "across the pond" with an open mind and readiness to experience different cultures and ways of life. I met people from America, Malaysia, and Germany, that will forever be in my life and have impacted it for the better. I cannot express how important it is to have an open mind and be understanding of others and to be willing to learn more about yourself. I came back from my semester in Salzburg with another semester of college completed, a certificate in international studies, and lifelong friends from all over the world. To try and categorize all of my experiences doesn't do any program overseas justice, especially my Salzburg College experience. I came back home with a broadened worldview and more understanding of how the world works. Not only did my experience leave me wanting to go back but also with an understanding of how we can always learn and grow whether that be on a team, by ourselves, or with other people we struggle to communicate with due to language barriers. Grab your passport and prepare for the stamps to fill the pages and the people and places to fill your heart and memories.

What would you improve about this program?
I would love it to see more interaction with other Germans that are around the age of the students.

Prosit!

Studying abroad at Salzburg College was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The faculty at the college was fantastic overall, my immersion into Austrian culture was complete, and my ability to travel elsewhere in Europe was nearly limitless. I was able to travel to several other countries while still falling in love with my 2nd home in Salzburg and feeling as though part of my heart will forever remain Austrian! If you are even considering choosing Salzburg College, pull the trigger. You will not be disappointed in your Austrian Study Abroad experience.

What would you improve about this program?
1 or 2 program professors could have been better to deal with. Otherwise, great program.

Salzburg College Spring 2018

I was drawn to this college by its location and small class size as well as special programs and trips included for the students. (This included trips to Munich and Vienna as well as ski, hiking, snowshoeing, and canyoning trips). Also built into the curriculum, were classes and programs that educated students on local history and culture.
I am so glad I got to stay in a host home! Though it was challenging at first to adapt to life in a different country my host mom was loving and helpful every step of the way. I also felt comfortable to ask my professors any questions academically related or not. The class schedule also enabled me time for independent travel around Europe.
Come with an open mind. This experience has taught me to be more flexible in all situations.
My favorite memory was a hike around the lake district of Salzburg on a warm sunny spring day, sitting on the dock with all my friends and jumping in the lake! I must go back!

Student review of Salzburg College

As the cliche goes, studying abroad is life changing. My time abroad allowed me to grow as a young adult and learn many things both in and out of the classroom. Salzburg College equips its students with all the tools needed for success but also allows students the freedom to figure things out for themselves. The staff and professors are personable and well versed in all that Salzburg has to offer; always willing to provide recommendations and answers to questions.
The college as a whole is a excellent academic institution that richly enhances their student's knowledge and appreciation of the Austrian culture and lifestyle. If I had the chance, I wouldn't give a second-thought about enrolling in the program again. I highly recommend Salzburg College to any students interested in studying abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
German courses - more out of class practice: ie, Johanna took us to the market to practice speaking and asking questions
Understanding Austria - If possible more excursions, I always learned the most out of classroom

Best four months of my life

I have always been a traveler, but my time in Salzburg was my first big trip to do all on my own. The support of the staff and my host mom was exactly what I needed to feel comfortable on my own in a foreign country. There were always available if we had questions, but they also allowed us to be independent and make our own discoveries in Austria. The program set-up was perfect and really helped us thrive. We took German speaking classes and Austrian history for the first half of the semester and then after spring break we were given the chance to choose our own classes, which was awesome! (I highly recommend the Intercultural Communication class, it was so informative and eye-opening). The school also took us on several excursions so we were learning outside of the classroom and actually getting to experience the true Austria. I think what I loved most was the city of Salzburg itself. It's a much smaller place than most of the European cities you'd dream of going, but for me, that made it the perfect place to explore. One of my favorite memories of the whole semester was the very first day we were in Salzburg. The school had set up this scavenger hunt that required us to walk all over the main town areas and find little Salzburg treasures. It helped us get our bearings in a new city in such a fun way and that was the perfect start to our semester. Additionally, Salzburg's awesome location gave us the change to go explore other places on the weekends, I think we ended up visiting 10 different countries, which is such a cool experience to now say that I've had. It was my amazing experience at Salzburg College that led me to a career in educational travel and changed my life for the better!

What would you improve about this program?
I had really high hopes for my photography class going into the semester - what better place to learn about the art of photography than one of the most beautiful parts of the world? However, the class was definitely for more of an already experienced photographer, not beginners. I wish I would have known more about the photographic expectations going into the experience because I definitely was not well-prepared for success in the class.

Opportunity of a Lifetime

To kick off my time at Salzburg College, I actually caught strep throat on the first day. However, even after just meeting me, the academic staff was extremely helpful and supportive in taking care of me and adjusting my academic schedule. They truly went above and beyond in all that they did in and outside the classroom. In addition, they made a unique situation set up to my preference to complete German I and II in just 4 short weeks, rigorous but still productive. My fondest memories were the excursions- both extremely insightful and and fun experience. Vienna and Upper Austria were absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend this program for anyone seeking to explore the world while gaining wisdom on other cultures, as well as making a few friends on the way.

What would you improve about this program?
Nothing- perfect.

Salzburg College Summer 2016

I spent a little over a month here going into my last year of college. My major was German in undergrad so I wanted to focus on that. I was able to have a one on one class 3-4 times a week, which was a great experience! We would go to the local farmers market, university, and other areas to practice German. This was great, I loved being able to actually use the language in everyday activities as part of my class! I also got to focus on the cultural differences between the United States and Austria and why they occur given the history and other factors. The other staff and teachers were really nice and always around to help you if needed. Overall, I had a great time. Salzburg is a very quaint and a great place to be. Being there for a month gave me plenty of time to check different things out. Salzburg College also plans trips to different places which makes it hassle free and a lot of fun!

What would you improve about this program?
Having a better idea of what classes would be like before arriving would have been nice. However, I overall had a great time.

Trip of a lifetime

Studying at Salzburg College was the best experience I’ve had in college yet. In such a short amount of time, I got to study in beautiful city, try new foods, learn how to use the public transportation, travel to surrounding cities, and meet lifelong friends. The faculty was beyond helpful and supportive through every step, I never once felt like I was alone yet I felt free to experience things for myself. After I got back from my trip, I changed my major to International Relations. I made the decision that I want travel to be a major part of my life and I hope that I will have the opportunity to return back to Salzburg soon.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish the program was longer!

Great experience!

I throughly enjoyed my time at Salzburg College. I learned so much about the history and culture of Austria and the German language. I loved being able to live with a host family and experience their everyday lives. They were kind, patient people who helped me learn the language better. Thankfully, they did know some English when I didn't know how to say something in German. The only bummer about the program is that all students there are foreigners and mainly Americans. I would have liked to get to know Austrian students my age compared to other American students. However, living with my host family allowed me to get to know Austrians more. I loved all the class trips we took. They were planned out but yet we still had our free time to do what we wanted. We also had a free weekend to travel wherever we wanted. This program has helped me understand more of what living in another country looks like. This was the longest I have ever and probably ever will be out of the country.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have liked to have had the chance to meet Austrians my age. I think that would have been fun to get to know people my age from another country and be able to learn from them.
