Staff Spotlight: Shannon Patricia Donnelly

Shannon Patricia Donnelly

How long have you been part of the team at ISV? What is your role?

Shannon: I went to work with ISV right after I graduated in 2007 and it was the the best decision of my life. I have led projects and excursions in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific islands of Fiji, ensuring safe, meaningful experiences for students who decide to spend their summers volunteering abroad.

What inspired you to join ISV?

Shannon: Originally, I wanted to be a participant on an ISV trip, but I had just returned from studying abroad when I first heard of the program and was about to graduate. I loved that ISV is a non-profit organization- quite different from many of their competitors- and I loved the missions and locations they had chosen. So, I decided I should just apply to work for them!

What is your favorite aspect of ISV's programs?

Shannon Patricia Donnelly

Shannon: The absolute best aspect of ISV trips in any country is that they give participants the chance to experience something out of their comfort zone. They walk away with a new sense of self-confidence and a better perspective on the global community.

What is the best story you've heard of a volunteer's experience with ISV?

Shannon: The most special part of the trip for every volunteer always ends up being the bonds they make with the people they're traveling with. Life-long friendships are formed over hard work and tons of fun.

What tips/insights do you have for volunteers considering volunteering abroad?

Shannon: Many volunteers choose destinations based on the adventure program alone, and while that is a huge and exciting part of the experience, almost every participant ends up enjoying the volunteer portion of their trip the most. I would suggest choosing a program based on that portion and really considering what type of volunteering your most interested in... Community or environmental.
