About Program

Gain hands-on wildlife experience with a variety of animal orphans, and assist in the rehabilitation and release process.

Work in Zimbabwe's only dedicated primate rehabilitation centre, with a mission for there to be no captive primates in Zimbabwe.

Join the sanctuary's team who have one goal in mind - the rehabilitation and release of Zimbabwe's wildlife.

Baboons and monkeys are the often-overlooked victims of the human-wildlife conflict, losing their natural habitat to over-grazing, agricultural expansion and the growth in human settlements. Their biggest predators are humans and are often treated as vermin, being shot or poisoned for eating crops and small livestock.

No animal is ever turned away from the centre, and every volunteer assists with their daily care, from Klipie the Klipsringer, Yoda and Marley the bushbabies, Kuda, Lucy and Umfazi the baboons and Peck the ostrich.

Program Highlights

  • Animal care: Work hands-on with wildlife orphans
  • Help raise baby monkeys and baboons - from bottle-feeding to bush walks, all the way to reintroduction and release
  • Behaviour enrichment: Go on bush walks with primates (and whichever other animals are keen to join in!), stimulating them to explore their natural habitat
  • Understand the rehabilition process as it applies to all animals at the sanctuary and be part of individual animals release strategies
  • Join the veterinary team when releases are carried out (usually from September to April)

Program Impact

The sanctuary was founded in 2014 when Umfazi the orphaned baby baboon was given to the team to raise. It remains the only dedicated primate rehabilitation and release facility in Zimbabwe. Since 2014, when the sanctuary was purpose-built to house primates, the centre has grown and has an open door

New Understanding

This project gave me the opportunity to understand primates in a way I had never had the opportunity to before. We were able to get close to them, enjoy their behaviour, nurture their instincts and appreciate their intelligence. The whole team at this project wear their hearts on their sleeves, the love that they have for the animals under their care is humbling. I could not recommend this project more, the conservation they are doing for primates and all creatures is evident. I’m so proud to have been a part of it and cant wait to go back!

An Incredible Experience

Volunteering at the sanctuary was one of the most amazing things we have ever done! Rob and I had the best time with the wonderful staff, animals and other volunteers. We were so humbled by the impact that this organisation is making in the lives of the animals that enter their doors. The genuine love, care and ambition for a full rehabilitation was second to none. I feel so grateful to have had this opportunity and could not recommend this project more. For anyone passionate about wildlife care and rehabilitation, this is the place for you! Those baboons found their way into my heart - as did every special creature there.
