I worked as an English teaching assistant in a police-run after school club named 'Proyecto Colibri.' This was based in Cusco in Peru, which is a truly magical place... especially in the month of June as there were celebratory parades in the street everyday! During my 4 week internship with Intern Abroad HQ and Proyecto Peru, I had the perfect balamnce of work and play. For the first 2 weeks, I spent each morning in Spanish lessons; they were such good value as the teacher is a native speaker and the classes were 3 hours long with a focus on conversation. The internship itself pushed me out of my comfort zone, as I was teaching English for the first time and had to speak Spanish all day. However, it was also great fun and I gave me room to be creative, for instance, I was allowed to implement new ideas in order to improve the structure of the after school club. Most importantly, I created beautiful bonds with the children and felt genuinely upset to leave them. My Spanish improved rapidly because of the full cultural immersion, and I saw many beautiful sites on the weekends, including; Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain and Lake Titicaca. Each week, the staff at Intern Abroad HQ would check in with my progress, moreover, the leaders at Proyecto Peru helped me to organise my trips, as well as ensuring my comfort in the host accommodation, and even organised social events to help me meet other students/volunteers. Overall, I had the experience of a lifetime, and I was in such great hands.
