Volunteering with students in Malaysia

I worked in a vocational school in the centre of KL with students from all over Malaysia of high school age. I only volunteered for one month but I wish I was able to stay for longer.

I was able to tailor my contribution and got involved in a range of activities. I met students for home work support, practising their English and computer skills, helped them prepare for interviews and employment after graduation and organised some field trips, taking groups to the local museums or the movies.

I had an amazing experience and would highly recommend it to anyone. I felt like part of the community immediately. Volunteering allowed me to really get to know a beautiful country with different ethnic groups and languages – in my school alone students had four different mother tongues. English was oftentimes their third language.

Just Volunteers is a great organisation, they charge no fees and it’s possible to tailor your contribution depending on your skills and interests. What I particularly liked about the set-up is that Just Volunteers works with different charities in a number of countries. Some of the projects are with younger children, some with older students and other are with adults. In addition, they work across different ethnic backgrounds and religions.
