Spend your summer living on a catamaran in the Caribbean with 12 other teens for 3 weeks! Experience the freedom of life on the water and the magic of the world beneath it. Learn to scuba dive and sail, build skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life, and bond with a crew of new friends as you island hop through the beautiful Caribbean.

Meet every morning with warm wind in your hair. You and your crew will work together to successfully navigate yourselves through the breathtaking French and Dutch Leeward Islands, earning a variety of scuba and sailing certifications along the way.

Visit Saba’s magnificent marine park – the perfect spot to earn dive certifications – to experience the underwater walls and towering pinnacles of Babylon, Tent Reef and Diamond Rock. Take plenty of breaks from sailing and diving along the way to body surf, water ski, stand-up paddleboard and hike through lush mountain rainforests.

Costa Rica & Panama Primate Studies was an experience I would not be the same without. The academic course was incredibly interesting and not only taught me a great deal about primates and rainforest ecology, but also about my own desire to learn. I loved the community service activities we did, and I truly feel like I made a difference. The leader of the day program was an amazing opportunity to test out a leadership position and learn how to make decisions to benefit the whole group. The work we did at the wildlife sanctuary was my favorite part because it was so hands on. This experience has helped me to realize what I want to do with my life, which is to be a zoologist.

What would you improve about this program?

If I had to change one thing about the program, I would include more field experiences and adventure related activities, like the rafting trip at the very beginning of the program. While I enjoyed the academic part, I wish we had had a little more time to explore the rainforests and cultures of Costa Rica and Panama.

The trip was a life changing experience. Diving exposes you to a whole new world. You and your crew mates will become great friends. Everyone had a great time and got along perfectly. If you have the opportunity to participate in a program definitely go.

What would you improve about this program?

This program was perfect.

I have been on two Broadreach trips in the past two years. I can honestly say that my Broadreach experiences have been the most amazing and life changing experience of my life. From spending the day at a hidden beach to become EFR and Rescue Diver certified Broadreach knows how to make a trip amazing. Needless to say that the day is filled from 5am to 11pm most days and since you're on a boat you never know the date. Don't be nervous though, you never feel tired because you are having too much fun! The people that are constantly around you become more then friends, but a family. After the awkward first day of not knowing anyone everyone starts to open up and bond. Even after leaving Broadreach you stay in touch and find times to video chat even though some people live on the West coast and the others on the East. The friendship that you make never goes away because you share so many great memories with people that it is physically impossible to forget. Even your group leaders keep in touch with you! Broadreach is an experience that has made me who I am, a girl who loves to spend her time learning about the ocean and blowing bubbles. I highly recommend Broadreach to any teenager who is looking for a fun, educational way to spend their summer, especially if they have a love for something. My experiences on Broadreach adventures have been so great that I wouldn't give anything in the world to exchange them. Not a day goes by where I don't think about some memory from one of my trips or dream of the next exotic location that I will travel to.

What would you improve about this program?

I would change the length of the programs because it seems like not even a week goes by and you are saying goodbye to your extended family.

Over this past summer I had a unique experience traveling through the Caribbean on a “live aboard yacht” for 3 weeks. On this trip of a lifetime, I got my advanced open water scuba certification and my International Yacht Training certification. I also learned so much about the history of the islands we visited and their various cultures. I really enjoyed visiting new places and getting to do community service on one of the islands. I did community service in St. Eustatius. The service I did was “scrub-mooring balls.” This process entailed diving while scrubbing the mooring line with a wire brush. Cleaning these items helps them last longer and keeps the surrounding waters cleaner. I thought it was a cool and really exciting experience because while bettering the St. Eustatius Ocean, it allowed me to give back to the island, especially after having such a rewarding experience. Another part of this trip that was quite unique was that I lived in very small quarters with 12 other students from all over the United States, and I made 12 great friends that I will have for the rest of my life. I really enjoy meeting new people and I felt that going on this trip I would make some great new friends. Making new friends is a skill that I felt that I have always been good at. I think this skill is very important because it gives me the opportunity to go anywhere and always feel comfortable. This trip also strengthened my love for travel. I truly enjoyed traveling around the Caribbean and I hope to travel all around the world and experience what the world has to offer. Another amazing part of this trip was the staff. They were the most caring, loving and interesting people I have ever met. While having fun they did an amazing job of being safe and teaching us things in a fun environment. The staff far pasted my expectations and I couldn’t have asked for better instructors. On a day to day basic the program entailed one major thing, which was DIVING. The whole group learned together, worked together and failed together. I believe that working together was the one thing that made our group a family. I would definitely recommend this program for anyone who wants to learn, grow and have an unforgettable adventure. GO BROADREACH

Why did you choose this program?

Broadreach has a variety of programs to offer. I was scrolling through all of the different choices and the Carribean Underwater Discoveries really caught my attention. My sister had gone on this program the year before and had nothing but positive reviews.

I knew that I was interested in scuba diving and sailing and when I heard that you live on a catamaran, I was determined to go on the trip. Looking at all of the different Carribean Islands that you would get to visit and dive near had me ecstatic. The program was my perfect fit.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Even though the program might have been the perfect fit, the cost was not. I applied for the scholarship in the fall of last year and unfortunately did not receive it. I was devastated. Broadreach later emailed my parents offering program discounts and the discount was still not big enough for us to afford. Broadreach was so accommodating in meeting our maximum amount that we could pay for and gave me a once in a lifetime experience.

I would give anything to go on another program with them.

The day finally came for me to leave and my flight out of Kentucky was delayed, causing me to miss my flight out of Atlanta to St. Maarten. We called Broadreach and they were so helpful in this chaotic situation. I left the next day and two instructors met me at the airport with a huge, warm, welcome. They drove me to the Pad and I was driven out to Miss Amanda Jones on the Mega Dinghy, which was a fun start to my trip. We blasted music and I met my best friends for the first time.

Broadreach also accommodated the fact that I am a vegetarian. All of the meals were separated from the meats and it was actually a big weight off of my shoulders that I had worried about. Basically anything that you need, Broadreach has your back.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Before the trip, I wish I would have known how much work you had to put into the trip in order to get stuff out of it. Going into the trip, I thought it was going to be a vacation. This was a learning experience, strengthening your skills in many different areas, such as leadership, group work, learning, listening, and so much more.

I am so glad that it was not “just a vacation” because I got so much out of the program. I would not change it for anything. Just know that going into the trip, you have to be willing and ready to work and learn in order to get the experience you want.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Every day has their certain rituals and leaders. The first step in starting your day was to be woken up by your LOD (Leader of the Day). The Leader of the Day was chosen the night before by our instructors and they were in charge of getting everyone motivated in each activity we did and that our dive gear, meals, messes, etc., were ready and cleaned up.

Then we had our two cooks each day that would prepare and serve three meals a day. The meals were all in the cookbook and written out for us, so everything usually went smoothly. We would start the day by eating breakfast, sloshing the deck if it was dirty, cleaning dishes and then either sailing, diving, hiking, or having a lesson. Sometimes we were offered to go kneeboarding, water skiing and wake-boarding with the “Jabronies.”

At the beginning of the trip, we had homework in our scuba diving workbooks in order to get certified. It was surprisingly fun to go out on the tramp with all your new friends and work together. The tramp is a huge bouncy net over the water on the bow of the boat and we would all stay up there talking for hours each night. It was definitely a highlight.

After our long days, the cooks would prepare and serve us our dinner. Before we ate we had to do our rituals, which included “Glums and Glows,” “the squeeze,” and “the quote of the day.” They became second nature by the end of the trip. Every day was something new and contained unforgettable memories.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear going on the Carribean Underwater Discoveries program would be making friends. Going into this, I was so nervous about making friends and not fitting in.

Once I got there, all of my worries washed away, because the instructors and other students were all so happy and nice. They are all so chill and treat you like family. We were all there for the same reasons and you connect over that. As long as you are yourself you will get along with everyone and have a blast.

What is your favorite memory from the trip?

My favorite memory from the trip was cliff jumping in St. Barths. We hung out with all of the different boats and met so many great people. We were all very encouraging to each other to just go for it and jump. We shared so many laughs, mostly because of the accidental flops into the water. We all jumped over and over again and it never got old, because of how fun it was.
