Teaching abroad turned into a career

After a year of teaching in China under my belt, I knew I wanted to come back. My main concern was that I was going to spend a few years with a lot of travel stories, but little to show for it with my professional self. I told my recruiter this when I applied. She told me about all of these teaching qualifications I could gain with EF. When I asked about other opportunities she said that it has that too. I took it with a grain of salt.

Five years later I have gained teaching qualifications, I've moved out of the classroom and started working in the central headquarters, and now I'm moving back to the US with a full time job with EF at their Boston office. I guess I proved my parents wrong with that one.

This "program" is a bit different from the others because it's not a program. It's a job. You are expected to work, but you get paid and you get plenty of holidays. Of the countries I visited while working with EF in China, about 50% were on my own and 50% were with company sponsored conferences. The housing isn't provided, but I liked that. They help out a ton with finding your apartment, and then I got to choose where I lived and how much I spent on it.

If you want to travel abroad, but also start a real career, this is the place.

Horrified mother.

The site says Education First, but it should say Saftey Last. I was horrified at the pick up procedures in Nice. My 17 year old daughter was left at the airport for over 2 hours and finally found a representative picking up another student. If you value your children’s safety I would not use Education First for emmersion language learning. In all of my travels to multiple third world countries I have never seen such total disregard for safety in pick up. We were told every thing was in order before our daughter left. I deeply regret using hard earned money to endanger my child.

What would you improve about this program?
Try and improve your communication. Leaving panicked exhausted parents trying to arrange safe transport for a child at 5 am using google translate and SIRI is unacceptable.
Response from EF International Language Campuses

Linda, we appreciate your feedback and will certainly use it to continue to improve our programs, specifically our arrival procedures. Since EF was founded, safety has always been our number one priority. For this reason, we ensure all students have multiple emergency contact numbers and clear instructions on how to find the EF representative waiting for them when they arrive in country. Of course, as is the case with travel of all sorts, flights change and last minute changes are always a possibility. EF offices and staff around the world remain flexible and available to students in these times of change and will certainly use your feedback to continue improving our emergency and pick-up protocol. Thank you again for your feedback and for choosing EF as your study abroad provider.

Academic Year abroad with EF Málaga

My experience in Màlaga was amazing. I learned a lot about life in general and, what is the most important, I learned a lot about myself what I did not know before. I improved my Spanish skills heaps and I enjoyed living in Màlaga so much, that I really do not want to go! My host mother treated me like really being part of the family and she made me feel so good. She helped me so much with everything, she showed me so much about myself and I know that she will continue being there when I need someone to talk to. I know that whenever I have the feeling that I need to talk to her, I just have to call her. She gave me an incredible feeling that made me feel so good. I am so happy I had this great opportunity to travel to Spain, to learn how is life over here, to get to know more about the different cultures, the different languages, about the different ways to live. To learn more about how to be happy and about how to be really "alive"! Málaga showed me that life definitely is a great gift, an opportunity that we have to take. Málaga remembered me that, YES, it definitely is possible to be happy. It definitely is possible to enjoy life and I was remembered, with every single sunstroke, how it feels beeing alive. I really do not have the right words to express my feelings connected with Málaga, because for me it is something really special. For me it is more than simply The Sunny Coast, for me it was my way to find back to myself again. So that´s why I am staying :-). During my great experience here I did everything possible to find a way to stay longer and finally I found a Job as Au-Pair, so I can stay a bit longer, what really makes me happy. I love being here. I love the life over here and I know for sure that I will return. I will come back or expressed with better words - I never will leave totally, because a part of my heart will stay here for ever.
Thank you, for everything. I really appreciate what you did for me - Màlaga.

Love,
Lizi

Incredible experience with EF Málaga

My experience in Málaga was incredible, when I came here I knew this city would be an adventure. If I have to tell something about my family I have just one thing: marvelous. Now I consider my host mom as my second mom because she was always there when I needed her and we had a really good time with her daughter and her grandaughter.
About the school, the ambience is really good the staff is helping when you need it, in class the teacher is always trying to do the best for us, I mean we learn playing games or something like that. So, for the people who have a problems with concentration in class it's a good solution to enjoy and learn at school.

Academic Year abroad with EF Malaga

I came to Malaga in december and at first I didn't know what to expect and how my experience was going to be... immidiatly I met people (from all ower the world) that make me feel comfortable, those people are now my friends. I have learned a new lenguage and also I can say that I know a new culture, "spanish culture" which has different food, different values and different approaches with different people.
In malaga I also met the best teachers in all over the world (Dori and Carmen ) full of energy and charm, that always helped the students, moreover I enjoy the weather which is really good in Malaga .

EF Málaga Improved My Spanish

I would advise everyone to go study abroad. Not only did I developed my language skills, I also developed a lot personally.
My Spanish skills have improved so much within such a short period of time. When I arrived I didn’t speak any Spanish anda after studying nine months abroad, I have the level of upper intermediate. I believe that there is no other way to become fluent in a language than to go abroad and ‘live the language’.

EF Málaga is a beautiful school, located close to the beach. During your daily life, you’ll be surrounded among local people, which is great for your cultural experience and language improvement.
The classes are very well organised, the staff is friendly and the school organises interesting activities and trips.

I would highly recommend EF Málaga, I’ve had the time of my life there!

Academic Year abroad with EF Malaga

I loved my experience in Málaga and I have fallen in love with the city. The teachers are amazing. One of the things that surprised me the most, is the close relation between the students and the teachers. Besides from this, it’s an amazing experience and I would recommend everyone who is able to,to make this decision. The school is located in the most relaxed neighbourhood of Málaga and close to the beach. I have learned so much about myself and have made the coolest friends but apart from all that, I speak a new language.

What would you improve about this program?
I would like to see that minors receive better information about the curfew and all the other things that you are not allowed to do,for example make roadtrips with your friends or certain activities. And also I think the staff deserves higher loans because they do so much for the school and the students.

Málaga Experience

EF Málaga is a perfect place to learn spanish and to make memories that you will never forget. The school is in a cozy neighbourhood where the people are friendly and you can find shops and restaurants very close by. One of the best things is of course the beach that is only five minutes away by foot, and there is always life by the beach.

The course is really good and you really learn a lot of the language in a short time. The progression is very noticeable and that is very motivating for me and that makes me work hard.

The social part of the program is of course very important, and you will make friends that you will never forget! There are also a lot of fun activities to do here, and I really recommend travelling around to nearby cities and places, there is so much to see!

What would you improve about this program?
I feel the program is designed for students that stay for a long time, so I really recommend staying for at least some months to get the best out of the experience.

Academic year abroad with EF Malaga

My experience in EF Malaga was amazing. My mother española is a lovely lady, whom I now love very much. Some things I really liked was the simple life. But I did not like the siestas. That was really annoying. I also liked the trips to other cities and villages in Spain, like Sevilla, Valencia, The smurf town, Nerja, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, and the trip to Marocco. Also the christmas lights was really amazing and a cool experience.
