About Program

Study abroad in Bridgetown, Barbados at the University of West Indies Cavehill through Rutgers University. Barbados is a beautiful island in the Caribbean, with exports in sugar, rum and molasses. The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown, which is the major financial and commercial center of the Caribbean.

The University of West Indies (UWI) in Cave Hill looks south towards Bridgetown, and with its small size and tropical surroundings, makes for a great place to study abroad. Courses of study include Law, Humanities & Education, and Pure & Applied Sciences. Go study in Barbados with Rutgers!

A semester in Barbados

Living in Barbados has exceeded my expectations. The country is very well developed. Most of the people are helpful in directing and assisting. My days vary depending on the weather and my class schedule. Most of the days here are sunny and breezy with some scattered showers. Before or after class can be spent on the beach or relaxing in doors. Getting from one part of the country to another can be a bit hectic if you are not used to public transportation and not a fan of walking. They have a public bus system and also mini vans that come more frequently. There is only one city and that is Bridgetown. Bridgetown is where the majority of retail sales take place. Its a busy place and you have to learn to bargain and budget because retailers have different prices for the same items and food.Although the currency is two to one for US dollar and 3 to one for the UK pound items and food in Barbados is expensive so budgeting is key. An important part of the day is eating. I've always preferred eating out, there are many different restaurants and mini huts and shacks that serve both bajan and other types of food. One of my favorite place is a shack close to the University of West Indies called Eddies. Another important aspect of living in Barbados is time management, the sun sets at 6pm, which means it get darker early. Safety is important so planning out your day ahead is helpful so you are able to take care of any major or tedious task in the daytime when businesses are still open and there are more help available. The nightlife is fun there are different options of entertainment including different bars, restaurants and clubs. It is key to go out in groups not only will you have more fun sharing your experiences but also for you and your peer's safety.
