So much fun!

My semester abroad in Alicante, Spain, was an immersion into Spanish culture and the sun-drenched life of the Mediterranean coast. My days were a blend of academic pursuits and afternoon explorations, where I quickly learned to navigate the city by the rhythm of its palm-lined esplanadas and the scent of saltwater in the air. Mornings began with churros and thick hot chocolate, followed by classes that deepened my understanding of Spanish history. The afternoons were for wandering through the narrow, winding streets of the old town, discovering hidden plazas, or relaxing on the expansive sandy beaches that define the city's coastline.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Octopus!
Pros
  • Amazing food
  • Lots of support
  • Light schoolwork
Cons
  • So many stairs in my building
  • It was cold

Alicante of 2022

I traveled to Alicante through USAC in the summer of 2022. Often times I reflect back on my time in Spain wishing I had spent more time. The flopping year I brought my mom and sister to Alicante. My Spanish grew incredibly and so did my confidence. I would highly recommend traveling with USAC. They are the best!! The friends I made were wonderful. It was scary going to a new country and not knowing anyone but everyone was so welcoming. Last year my sister studied abroad as well and had a wonderful time. Could not recommend enough!!

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment would be from when my group traveled to Barcelona. We had so much fun in the hostel. Everyone I met there was wonderful!!
Pros
  • Language growth
  • Great professors
  • Great friends
Cons
  • Too short!!
  • I wish there had been more class options

An Immersive, Supportive, and Unforgettable Study Abroad Experience

My study abroad experience with USAC was truly unforgettable and offered the perfect balance of cultural immersion and support. I loved how involved I could be in the local community, especially through English tutoring Spanish students (and getting paid!), as well as participating in a Spanish language exchange where I practiced my Spanish while helping a Spaniard improve their English. The housing was conveniently located in the city, making it easy to explore and feel fully immersed in daily life. From the moment I arrived, the USAC staff was incredibly welcoming and consistently went out of their way to help my roommates and me whenever any issues arose. The program also offered a variety of free excursions that allowed us to indulge in the culture and discover some of the best-kept local secrets. One of my favorite experiences was taking a traditional Spanish cooking class, which I highly recommend—we made paella and many other classic Spanish cuisine staples.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take it all in and take advantage of everything the program offers you—participate in excursions, get involved in the local community, and say yes to opportunities that may feel outside your comfort zone. Take time to explore the city on your own, practice the language as much as possible, and truly immerse yourself in the culture. The more effort you put into the experience, the more rewarding and unforgettable it will be.
Pros
  • Strong support system—USAC staff is welcoming, accessible, and genuinely helpful throughout the program.
  • Excellent cultural immersion opportunities, including language exchanges, paid English tutoring, and free excursions.
  • Convenient, centrally located housing that makes it easy to explore the city and engage in daily life.
Cons
  • At times, the amount of schoolwork can feel overwhelming, especially while trying to balance travel and cultural experiences.
  • Some excursions have fixed dates, which can be difficult to plan around if you want to travel outside of Spain.
  • Managing academics alongside travel and social activities requires strong time-management skills and can feel stressful at times.

USAC Alicante

I think USAC was a great program for my study abroad experience! I loved the program and I loved the people who worked for USAC. Everything went so smoothly and I think all of the activities were perfect for our program. I also thought the education was perfect. It was challenging, but I learned so much and I am so grateful for it. The people I met along the way were also great. I did not know anyone going into this, and I feel so lucky that I get to know all of these people outside of Spain! USAC is great.

Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience!

Even though my program only lasted three weeks, I still have deeply fond memories of exploring Plaza de Los Luceros, eating tapas with friends at 100 Montaditos, hiking the mountain trail to el Castillo de Santa Barbara, taking the tram to the UA campus for class, and our group excursions to Guadalest and Valencia. The class I took was very fun and informative, and my classmates and I had a great time working together. The USAC and UA staff were wonderful and supportive throughout the duration of the program. I only wish we could have stayed longer!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take in every moment. Be vigilant about connecting with your group, make plans together, and have as much fun exploring the city as you can. (Bring some extra money for food, too. Alicante is a foodie's paradise.)
Pros
  • Lots to see, great food options, cheap groceries nearby
  • Tram/high speed rail lets you explore a lot of the city/area
  • On the Mediterranean Coast
Cons
  • Can get expensive, have to watch budget
  • Non-semester-long programs can feel short

Alicante, Spain - The Best College Experience I’ve Ever Had!

Thanks to USAC, I was able to live with a loving and welcoming host family during my time studying abroad in Alicante. During this time, I not only grew as a Spanish speaker and teacher, but also as a person. USAC helped broaden my world view and I had the opportunity to connect with many like minded and different perspectives during my 4 month stay. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would go through USAC 100% as their advisors and program leaders were very organized and helpful. USAC really knows their stuff when it comes to study abroad!

What was your funniest moment?
Spending time and getting to know my host family. I also loved making new friends at the university and getting to travel to cities like Valencia and Barcelona on the weekends!
Pros
  • Sightseeing
  • Helpful staff
  • Housing

USAC ALICANTE REVIEW

Coming from the Midwest, I was surprised that a lot of people started to go outside starting at 5pm. The streets were bustling until 2-4am. It made me feel safe when I had to throw out trash at midnight. I also love how people were more in the present moment, and took their time to enjoy dinners and talk to their families and friends. All the Spanish people I met were also really warm. Spain is a country I want to go back, I recommend all my friends to visit when they’re traveling and they tell me it’s the funniest one to explore.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
An octopus! 🐙 I’ve never got a chance to try it before my USAC Alicante trip, (it was during a dinner with our landlords daughter). It was delicious, and I didn’t have texture issues like I thought I would.
Pros
  • Night life
  • Inexpensive food
  • Networking
Cons
  • Different grading system for class
  • Less class accommodations
  • 3 weeks was too short

Amazing experience in Alicante!

I loved the USAC Program Alicante. I was there from January - May 2025. I chose Spain because I wanted the classic European study abroad experience and I chose Spain because I wanted to work on my Spanish. I stayed with a host family that was super kind and made great food and was located close to the city center of Alicante, and about a 20 minute walk to the beach. The classes were very interesting and had good professors but a very manageable amount of homework. It was really nice to not have classes on Fridays. Alicante is a beautiful city on the Mediterranean and as a mid size Spanish city, it has everything you need and more, but isn't too overwhelming. The program director from USAC was very kind, friendly, and helpful. I would highly recommend this program! I would recommend looking up Youtube videos of Alicante to see what the city looks like. It also has a nice airport with a good amount of flights.

Pros
  • Alicante is on the beach
  • Alicante has the Castle of Santa Barbara and interesting Roman history
  • Classes at the University of Alicante have small class sizes
Cons
  • Alicante isn't a capital / super major city
