About Program

Volunteer or be an Intern at the Deparment of Social Welfare and Community Development in Cape Coast will enhance your ability to understand social issues related in the Ghanaian society.
The Department has three main divisions: Community Care, Child Right Protection and Promotion and Justice Administration. Their Mission is it, to improve the well-being of the local communities through promoting development with equity for the disadvantaged, vulnerable and the excluded people.
Within the mentioned core areas, you will be presented with opportunities to work with persons with disabilities, register and monitor the activities of NGOs/CBO, Day Care Centres, Orphanages, etc., work on family cases such as child maintenances or supports, child custody, paternity and family reconciliation and much more.
You can get to know the interity of the Department's work or focus on an aspect that interests you most.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Internship at DSWCD

I did an internship for six months at the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development in Cape Coast. The internship was organised by Volunteer With Ghana. I got picked from them at the airport, stayed with other volunteers at a host family's house and was taking care of the whole time. If there was anything I needed I could always talk to them at any time to receive support.
The internship gave me a very interesting insight about Social Work in Ghana and how things are being handled in their culture. I learned a lot about this culture during my internship as well as through trips with the organiser from Volunteer with Ghana. It allowed me to expand and change my world view in a positive way.
I totally recommend volunteering or doing an internship with Volunteer with Ghana and would always do it again!
