About Program

The Kumaon and Eastern Garhwal regions of the Indian Himalaya are rugged, glacially carved ranges world famous as destinations for climbing and trekking. The area's low-lying valleys have been the traditional trade routes between India and Tibet and inhabited by remote pastoral communities over hundreds of years. You’ll have the opportunity to study, observe, and engage in ways of life similar to hundreds of years ago.
As you make your way up high-mountain passes, some reaching 15,000 feet above sea level, you will travel through river valleys lush with foliage. You'll visit teahouses and hike past fields that are still worked using traditional farming methods as you develop strong backcountry skills and learn the core NOLS curriculum. Your cultural studies and classes in conversational Hindi will aid in your interactions with local villagers. You'll go beyond and see an India few foreigners ever encounter, deep into the remote Himalayan wilderness to experience the land and culture.
