Great experience!

InternNZ helped me get an internship in NZ within a very short amount of time and I am very thankful for their work and cooperation!

Bob has been a great help throughout the process of finding an internship and I was lucky to match with my first option. The internship has been a lovely experience and I would recommend NZ (Wellington specifically) to anyone, especially young people/students.

The housing provided was a bit poor but has all facilities that are needed. I would recommend trying to find a different place if you can but if you're on a tight schedule like me it will do!

Makes the impossible possible

Can highly recommend Intern NZ! For one of my semesters as a Master's student at university, I could choose to either do electives or an academic internship - and as someone who's soon a graduate, I wanted to do an internship to get more experience and a taste for the different pathways of future career options. I've worked in a research library previously, but wanted to try out the museum world - so I set my goal to intern at a museum, preferably abroad to get international experience at the same time. I tried to do it on my own at first, but was dealing with both finishing my exams for the semester + never hearing back from the museums I had tried to contact. I then googled around and found Intern NZ & OZ, and decided to go for it - I could focus on my exams and hand over all the administrative things to someone else; someone who had the right contacts, connections, and made the whole process feel a lot safer and like it was actually do-able (while also being affordable!). Within no time, they had found my dream internship at a museum in New Zealand that fit my skill-set as well as opportunities for growth; I felt really happy and like I couldn't have landed this internship without the expertise from the team at Intern NZ.
I have learned so much and have developed both relevant skills for my future career, but also as a person - going abroad and experiencing a different culture and environment than what you're used to truly expands your horizons (as cliché as that sounds). And I can in general also really recommend New Zealand as a destination - it's full of adventures, lots of new nature and cultural things to explore, the working culture is great, people are incredibly kind and welcoming, and as someone arriving here all the way from Denmark, it's just really fun to be on the other side of the planet! I wouldn't have been able to come here without the help from Intern NZ, so I'm really grateful for their amazing service (and also for being able to make other intern friends through their orientation and events) that made the impossible possible and granted me an opportunity to get the exact work and career experience I was looking for.

Pros
  • Relevant academic work experience
  • Great support and services

Great international internship experience

My internship experience in New Zealand was unique. I could develop a new practical and marketable skill and got more practical working experience in my field of study. Furthermore i could improve my (technical) business English through daily team meetings with coworkers and my supervisor as well as my overall ability to understand and communicate in English. Additionally i could do some international networking and also i made new friends from different countries in Europe and New Zealand. I did the internship in Wellington, which is a great city for a lot of fun activities. I had a great time in the nightlife and also could go out to different restaurants and bars during the week. As a fan of Lord of the rings i could see some famous und special film locations based around Wellington. Also i could do amazing tramping tours in the stunning nature nearby Wellington so far. I am satisfied i did this international internship and i am looking forward for the upcoming backpacker travel adventure through New Zealand and other countries close to it.

Pros
  • Developing intercultural experiences
  • Improving my (business) English and developing a new practical skill
  • Growing as a person by leaving the comfort zone and getting to know new friends
Cons
  • It costs a lot of money and i didn't get paid during the internship
  • The weather can be very windy and rainy sometimes
  • The apartment was sometimes a little bit cold because the heating didn't work so good

InternNZ found me an internship from across the world

As part of my education at an IT college in Croatia, I was required to do an internship for a company and use what I'd learned. InternNZ made it possible to do so in New Zealand, allowing me to both finally see the country for the first time and spend the internship with my family. InternNZ provided me with several options and didn't give up on finding me the ideal internship until I was satisfied, and the friendliness and patience of the staff in this endeavor cannot be overstated. If you are looking for an internship in New Zealand, no matter where you're coming from, give InternNZ and its talented staff a try.

Internship

Working as an intern is great opportunity to learn professional skills. You can put your academic knowledge on practical and field based operations. I think every student should think about to take a internship program in between or after their studies to grow better and faster. Through internship you can get professional references from your workplace to make a fancinating resume and it's also a good opportunity to connect with people who are well experienced in your specific field. At the end I want to say all the best for future interns.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because I wanted a chance to study abroad before graduating with my Bachelors Degree and I also needed to complete an internship before graduation. I chose to intern in New Zealand because I didn't know very much about the country and I wanted a chance to learn more about a different culture.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

My program provider and university were able to assist me every step of the way. I started looking at my different options when I visited my university's study abroad office and from there they gave me a list of different providers that offered internships in my field of study. The study abroad office helped me find scholarships and apply for my passport, they also arranged a pre-departure meeting a few months before my internship.

The provider I chose to go with, Intern NZ, also helped me every step of the way. They arranged a pre-departure video chat with other students and Intern NZ staff that I would meet in New Zealand. Intern NZ was able to match me with my perfect internship and give me any assistance I needed while abroad.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

One piece of advice I would give someone going on my program would be to take full advantage of your free time. I stayed in Wellington, New Zealand right in the heart of downtown, so there was always something to do or another thing to explore. There are also a lot of different transit systems like the bus, train, or ferry to take you to another city on the North Island or down to the South Island.

My favorite excursion in New Zealand was the trip I took to Taupo with one of my flatmates. My boss had recommended I see Taupo before flying home so my friend and I reserved a rental car and took the five-hour drive. We got to see thermal craters, see Maori rock carvings, and even swim in a natural hot spring.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average week as a participant in my program was a little different than a traditional internship because dance studios typically are only open in the evenings.

Monday-Friday I would typically take a bus to work around 2:30 pm and arrive at work around 3 pm. I would help with class warm-ups, work on studio paperwork and admin duties, and teach a few classes with my day ending around 8 pm.

Occasionally, I would come in for work on the weekends, but typically only when we had an upcoming show or competition.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Going into my experience abroad, my biggest fear was feeling anxious about changing my lifestyle. It scared me that I wouldn't have a car, so I would have to depend on public transportation and I would be moving to an unfamiliar area. I overcame these fears by learning more about the transportation system, asking questions, and leaving the apartment more often so I could get to know my surroundings.

My views on the issue changed when I started to step out of my comfort zone and adjust to living somewhere brand new. With the help of my friends and coworkers encouraging me to explore Wellington and other parts of New Zealand, I became less fearful and more confident in traveling around a new place.

Do you have a favorite story you'd like to share?

One of my favorite stories was when I traveled with the dance studio to Palmerston North for a big national dance competition. I was a chaperone in one of the cabins with a few of the students and it was so much fun getting to know them outside of the dance studio. They had so much they wanted to know about American culture and I had so much I wanted to know about Kiwi culture.

The next day the dance team woke up and I got to help with hair and makeup and getting everyone ready for their big competition day. After everyone was ready, I got to see the team perform their dance and cheer them on. It was such a fun experience with the studio and great bonding experience with the students and staff.

What is your favorite travel memory?

I have been very lucky to travel around the world before settling in New Zealand and have a lot of favourite memories. To choose one it would have to be New York.
It was always a dream of mine to go there so when I go the opportunity to go there with Intern NZ Intern OZ I jumped at the opportunity. It was everything I ever dreamed off and of course, I visited all the tourist spots like Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park and of course shopping at Macey's! I just wish I had more time to explore more of New York.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Since I started working at Intern NZ Intern OZ, I have definitely grown professionally and personally and this is down to my colleagues I work with and our candidates. We have a pretty cool team where everyone is very supportive of each other and love the work that we do. Our candidates range from International and Domestic so we have an interesting mix of people that we get to work with.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The best stories are when we have candidates that are doing internships so they can get a foot in the door of their desired industry. When they are employed soon after either by the company they are interning with or another company, it feels good to know that we have been able to help. A lot of our candidates are relying on the experience to help them get a kick start in their career so it is a pleasure to be a part of that.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to do a Virtual Internship. It is our newest programme and with Covid-19 it's all about working online. It is the new normal. I would have the opportunity to upskill while also learning how to be a valuable part of the team while working remotely. I think this is a great skill to add to my CV.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

There are so many things that I am proud of with our company and these include how we as a team value our candidates. We care about the experience that they will be gaining and their well being. We have a very strong support system in place. It helps that we as a team work really well together and have clear and open communication.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

We may be a small company but our success is largely down to how well we all work as a team. A lot of our candidates come through word of mouth which will show that we do provide a good service. We communicate really well to ensure we are efficient and are very supportive of each other. We also have many opportunities available to us to learn and upskill.
