CEA CAPA Buenos Aires - Engineering Program

I studied abroad with CEA CAPA in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the spring 2025 semester. I study industrial engineering as well as Spanish, so the program was a perfect fit for me. I took engineering electives such as linear algebra, international business, and data visualization, as well as a Spanish class. I also had the chance to take my own independent study class through my university through doing volunteer work and using my spanish speaking skills. The staff at CEA were incredibly helpful and very friendly, whenever I had a problem or needed help I was able to reach out to them. Buenos Aires is an amazing city, and I recommend that anyone visit or live there, coming from someone who wouldn't even consider myself a "city" person. There is always something fun to do, and public transit is very accessible, as well as the city is safe.

CEA Buenos Aires Engineering Program

Spending a Spring Semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina was an incredible opportunity! I got to make friends from across the globe, some locals and others experiencing a new life like I was. The environment in Argentina is so diverse, one week I was in humid weather seeing the Iguazu Water Falls while the next I was in the Southern Region of Patagonia seeing penguins and sea lions. The in country staff was amazing! Each and every one of them was so kind and willing to help with any questions/concerns. Finally, taking the Food & Culture class was the best decision ever, I got to try many different foods and snacks iconic to the country.

CEA CAPA Latin American Studies Buenos Aires

The CEA CAPA Latin American Studies program in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was a life-changing experience. I participated in the early start program and attended Universidad de Belgrano. The on-site support staff was nothing short of exemplary, as they were there at nearly all hours of the day to help out whenever. CEA CAPA did a great job organizing the group trips and communicating throughout the semester. Classes at UB were standard university level, but nothing over the top, allowing time for individual travel. Buenos Aires is a safe city in comparison to other major cities I have traveled to, and it is very easy to navigate. Public transportation is easy to learn and will be your best friend, as it is a large city. Argentina has so much to offer and if you put yourself out there, this trip can be a great experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Try anything and everything. It seems common sense and is quite cliché, but I can not stress this enough. Some of my favorite memories and best moments from my semester were from spur-of-the-moment ideas and decisions.
Pros
  • Open and welcoming culture
  • Adventure-friendly
Cons
  • Rising prices

Buenos Aires - Mi Lugar Favorito del Mundo

Studying abroad in Buenos Aires was one of the coolest experiences of my life. The food? Absolutely incredible. The meat was on another level, and the overall quality of food was so good that even the stomach issues I dealt with in the U.S. disappeared while I was there.

My homestay was amazing—my host grandparents were truly iconic. They were full of personality, came out to tango nights with us, and made the experience feel so authentic. Speaking of tango, it was everywhere—you could stumble across people dancing casually on the streets. The weekend markets (ferias) were another highlight, packed with energy and color.

The city itself was alive with music and culture. I went to jazz nights in cozy cafés, explored Puerto Madero by the water, climbed Torre Monumental, and even visited a former theatre that had been turned into a gorgeous bookstore. Everywhere I turned, there was something happening.

I stayed in the “honeymoon phase” the entire time I was there. The classes were tough 😅, but the group of people I studied with made it so much fun. Plus, I tried mate, which was such a fascinating cultural tradition—people usually drank it at home and shared it with friends.

Overall, Buenos Aires was vibrant, exciting, and full of life. I couldn’t recommend the experience enough.

What was your funniest moment?
One of the funniest moments happened during our very first nights out at a restaurant. Everyone, of course, spoke Spanish, and while I knew the immersion would help me improve a ton, at the beginning I hadn’t spoken much Spanish in years.

We went to order our steaks (which, by the way, are both everywhere and super affordable in Argentina) and confidently asked for them “medio raro” instead of “poco hecho,” which is what they actually say for “medium-rare.” The waiters looked at us like we were absolutely crazy until we explained what we meant, and then they laughed and taught us the right phrase—with huge smiles on their faces.

It was such a lighthearted moment, and honestly a perfect example of how welcoming everyone was to people learning the language.
Pros
  • Passion
  • Food - Specifically the steak!!!
  • Las Ferias del Ciudad! Truly a must-have experience!
Cons
  • Dinner is at 9pm, earliest!

Fun and Language in Buenos Aires

I studied abroad learning intensive Spanish language and I couldn't be happier with the program. I was able to explore and learn about the culture and my class while feeling supported, safe, and considered. We went on excursions where I was able to experience life in a gaucho town, drawing horses and eating authentic cuisine with the rest of my group. CEA CAPA encouraged us to strengthen our bonds and to always be curious about the world around us. Without CEA CAPA I wouldn't have been able to experience so fully the culture of Buenos Aires.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I was eating dinner with my family and it included some delicious pork. I remember saying how delicious it was and then the family told me it was cow feet!
Pros
  • Main cuisine is delicious
  • Mate culture is so inspiring
  • The city is gorgeous
Cons
  • The rest of the food was more bland
  • Some parts of the city were dangerous to go alone
  • It takes a long time to get from one part of the city to another

Buenos Aires Study Abroad

I had an amazing time during my time in Argentina. My classes were very valuable and interesting as well as added in an aspect of city exploration that I loved. My host family was amazing living with a amazing women and 3 other study abroad students that helped me to improve my spanish and also create a very comfortable living atmosphere. The city has a very modern and almost European feel making it extremely safe while also still having great activities and areas to explore. Overall, I would absolutely suggest this program to anyone looking to study spanish and travel to a beautiful city.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I think you really want to have an open mind and be flexible when travelling on trips like these as being able to meet new people and try new things is what can really set these trips apart from any normal vacation.
Pros
  • Beautiful City
  • Great people (Host family, fellow students, professors, Argentinians, etc.)
  • Very flexible weekly schedules
Cons
  • Food could be hit or miss at times (Apart from host family's cooking which was AMAZING)
  • Travelling in the winter and losing light early made days feel very short (Although I personally liked the weather)

Buenos Aires Spring '24

I had such an incredible experience studying abroad. I made friends, that I am very grateful to still have in my life and have regular communication with my host family. My Spanish speaking abilities increased dramatically, and I loved the courses I took. My placement could not have been more perfect in terms of location, roommates and host family. I was lucky enough to be able to explore the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina in general, and other neighboring countries to create memories that will last a lifetime.

What was your funniest moment?
One of the funniest moments I can remember is sitting around the dinner table enjoying sobremesa (the conversation you have at the dinner table after the meal is concluded) and one of the other students I was staying with was asking my host mother's boyfriend if he enjoyed something, but because gustar is a reflexive verb he essentially asked my host mom's boyfriend if he liked my host mom... my roommate did not catch the error, but the other 6 of us at the table did. To say the least we all exploded in laughter (and we had to explain to our roommate his error)
Pros
  • Improving Language Abilities
  • Taking really interesting classes
  • Meeting new people/having new cultural experiences

My Experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina

My semester in Buenos Aires was the most incredible time of my life. Something that made my experience amazing was the host family I got to live with. I lived with my host mom, host brother, and my roommate who was also a student. The memories I made in the house make up some of my best memories abroad. My host mom was a professional chef, so we always ate the most incredible meals. We used to sit around the table for hours after dinner just talking, laughing, and translating. Luckily, I still message with my host family nearly every week!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
While travelling in the North of Argentina, we got to try empanadas filled with llama meat. I was really nervous, but they were delicious!
Pros
  • Improved Spanish speaking ability
  • Friendships all across the US
  • Family in Argentina that I can also visit again
Cons
  • The city is noisy which may not be everyone's preference
  • Students need to be aware of their surroundings to stay safe
