About Program

Modern Observational Oceanography (COURSE NOT AVAILABLE IN 2021)

Instructors: Dr. Rod Johnson (BIOS), Ruth Curry (BIOS), Dr. Maureen Conte (BIOS and MBL), Dr. Damian Grundle (BIOS), Dr. Amy Maas (BIOS)

This course will provide students with a broad introduction to and practical experience in the field of observational oceanography utilizing a variety of state-of-the-art technologies and methods.

Open to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in oceanography programs. Adequate standing in university-level physics and chemistry courses is required. MATLAB will be used for analysis and visualization of data, but prior experience is NOT required. SCUBA certification is also not required.

Program Highlights

  • Participate in an overnight BATS sampling cruise to the Hydrostation S time series site aboard R/V Atlantic Explorer
  • Hands-on learning about autonomous sampling technology by deploying gliders from our fleet of AUVs
  • Learn about ocean observations collected by the commercial container vessel Oleander
  • Conduct a "diurnal cycle" experiment
  • Work on an individual project utilizing state-of-the-art methods, technology and instrumentation
