About Program

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. It is the biggest city in the country, one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the least visited of the European capitals. That doesn’t mean it lacks exciting things to do, interesting history, or beautiful scenery. It boasts one of the mildest climates in Europe and includes stunning beaches and dramatic natural landscapes. The Tagus (Tejo) is the largest river and its estuary at Lisbon hosts various ships from around the world. It is also one of Europe’s least expensive capital cities and offers exceptional value for food and public transport.

USAC's summer, semester, and yearlong programs at Lisbon's Universidade Catolica Portuguesa's (UCP) are ideal for students interested in studying in one of the oldest, most beautiful, and most affordable port cities in Europe. The program enables you to study from a wide range of undergraduate courses taught in English including those in culture, social sciences, humanities, and business.

You may request reasonable accommodations after your initial application is complete. We routinely receive requests for scheduling, material, and environmental accommodations for the classroom setting, which may include assistive technology, scribes and readers, printed material, and interpretation.

Impact

Sustainability

Environmentally-conscious students choose USAC because many of our programs are held in some of the most sustainable countries in the world. There are options to take coursework in sustainability and the environment, as well as field trips and studies where students can leave a lasting impact on their host country.

My eye opening experience in Lisbon!

I had an amazing time in Lisbon, Portugal! Two months out I still feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to study abroad in such a beautiful and unique country! My program advisors were incredible and showed us so many hidden gems, allowing me to experience some of the most breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and lively events that I don't believe I would have discovered if I had traveled to Portugal on my own or in any other context. The city is easy to navigate (the metro is straightforward and clean) and the locals were warm and welcoming. The program helped me gain confidence and grow to be more independent and self-assured.

Pros
  • Breathtaking scenery
  • City is easy to navigate
  • Cost of living is much cheaper than the US!
Cons
  • I did not receive much pre-departure guidance.
  • Small number of people in the USAC program - there were only 5 of us
  • The experience sort of forced me to be independent at times, which ended up being a huge personal growth experience for me so not necessarily a con.
