Houhai Chengdu Review

Dan was able to help me find and secure an interview in China with a reputable organization. Once accepting the job, Dan also helped me communicate with the company and obtain the necessary paperwork and authentication needed to go to China. The whole process went quite smoothly, although was delayed by some communication issues and government issues. If one thing could be improved, it is the agents understanding of the current situation and ability to answer tough questions. Overall, the experience was good, and I would recommend him to other people.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Singing KTV the first time I met all my colleagues. I overcame it by trying to have fun, and realizing that it's a good social opportunity.
Pros
  • Structured company
  • Social interaction
  • Convenient life
Cons
  • Communication

An empowering mentor

I had the privilege of working with Dan Wharton during my job search and I can say with confidence that he’s been invaluable to the entire process showing exceptional levels of support. Dan was proactive from the onset and connected me with an agency, streamlining the process and ensuring I had access to relevant opportunities. Obtaining the appropriate visa can be challenging, but Dan’s background and expertise made it manageable. Our communication was carried out across a few different channels and Dan was always prompt when addressing my questions and provided much needed reassurance. He’s capable of understanding your situation and will tailor his support accordingly. He’s a dedicated partner who seems to genuinely care about his candidates’ success. I highly recommend his services.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Turbulence during the flight:
I flew for ~16 hours and despite having flown before, the constant jolts made it challenging to rest. The anticipation of landing in a new country didn’t help either.
Pros
  • Immersed in a new culture. Vibrant streets, markets and traditions have been eye opening.
  • Witnessing the enthusiasm of the students has been very rewarding.
  • The culinary adventures of exploring local cuisine has been delightful
Cons
  • Language barrier: communicating effectively is a daily challenge (but one that I enjoy)
  • The climate caught me off guard initially!
  • Being far from home tugs at my heartstrings

Dan is the best!

Dan has been awesome since I first contacted him! When I was searching for employment in China, he would call me before each interview to prepare me and offer a pep talk. When my first contract fell through, he was quick to help me find a new recruitment agency in China. Before I left for China, he would usually check in via text about once a week just to see how I was feeling about it. When I expressed dissatisfaction with my recruitment agency, he backed me up and gave me advice on how to handle it. Throughout the process, he's been empathetic and supportive - I've got nothing but praise for him, and I've even recommended him to some of my friends who want to teach in China!

Teach English Global

I'm very glad I made the decision to partner with Teach English Global. The owner/operator Dan, has been amazing from start to finish. He responded promptly to all my questions. He was readily available for phone calls. He provided timely and accurate information about the Chinese visa process and what I should expect to do to get into China. He helped me identify two key organisations very quickly, one of which helped me achieve my first teaching position in China at a fantastic school. Since being in China, Dan has also kept contact and been there to help if need be. I would highly recommend Teach English Global. If you're looking to start your teaching journey in China, reach out to Dan!

Dan at Teach English Global

Dan was extremely helpful throughout the entire process of moving to China to teach English, from beginning to end. He found me a company to interview and subsequently work for, and he offered guidance about interviews, life in China, and the visa process. Everything was clear and it made the process a lot less daunting. He answered all my questions and he regularly checks in to make sure everything is OK. I would highly recommend reaching out to Teach English Global if you are considering teaching overseas. Thanks, Dan!

Very helpful

Dan has been incredibly helpful throughout this whole process. Just having someone with his knowledge of the industry quells the fear of the unknown that comes from starting a new job on the other side of the world. From helping me gather all of the necessary documents to apply for my visa, to making sure I had all of the travel essentials needed for life in China, Dan had me covered. All in all, I would highly recommend Dan and the service that he offers, I can’t imagine having gone through the process without him.

A Very Happy Customer (EFL teacher, 2024)

I contacted TEG because my TEFL institution recommended them first and foremost for China. After getting here, I completely understand why: Dan is an absolute gem about explaining the nuances of the application process, a prompt and clear-headed go-between, and patient -- my god, was this man patient with me! And even once his job was technically done, Dan guided me through the initial culture shock and made sure my needs were met with my institution. I truly can't recommend TEG highly enough!!!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I had some trouble with accomodation/admin communication on arrival. It was about 50% me having culture shock, 50% my institution's onboarding processes. I got through it largely because TEG not only lent an ear to my troubles even after they were technically "done" with my placement, but also because they advocated for me to meet with higher admin and get the problems resolved. The arrival of future teachers at my school will be easier because TEG went to bat for me; other programs might have left me to hang, but TEG did not. They are really, really in this to link teachers with the best possible placements.
Pros
  • Responsible recruiting company
  • Prompt and helpful responses
  • Goes above and beyond
