About Program

With tourism dominating the Jamaican economy, communities supported by traditional sugar-farming, such as Petersfield, are entering a new era in which they must act to ensure the sustainability of their communities. The Association of Clubs (AOC) was founded with this goal of individual and community empowerment in mind. Amizade first partnered with the AOC in 2003 and continues to connect volunteers to this unique grassroots organization as they work to meet strengthen the Petersfield community.

Volunteers in Petersfield participate first-hand in the life of a small, rural town. Home-stays with local families and service alongside community members gives volunteers a context in which they can contribute their skills while absorbing the stories and strength of people working to build a better future for their community.

Volunteer projects often include building and repairing homes for community members that lack adequate housing.

No, I don't recommend this program

Great program but accommodations needed improvement.

This is a great program. However, the AOC staff was disorganized the week our group visited. I think this was uncharacteristic based on other feedback I've heard regarding their past programs. The main concern of our participants was the poor health conditions in the host family homes. Otherwise, it was an amazing trip. We had plenty of opportunities to interact with local people and learn about the culture in Jamaica. There was a good mix of volunteer service and entertainment activities.
