About Program

Jamaica is a diverse destination that is perfect for travelers and volunteers. The island is known for its mesmerizing beaches, legendary music, delicious cuisine, and unique language. It’s also home to some of the friendliest people in the world. The moment you land in Jamaica, you’ll witness its diverse culture and beauty first-hand.

But Jamaica, like many other countries, struggles with poverty, unemployment, access to quality education, and healthcare. And so, volunteering in Jamaica offers the experience of a lifetime. With or projects in Childcare, Teaching, Sports Coaching, Environmental Conservation, Community Development, Women Empowerment, Agriculture, or Medicine and Healthcare, you make a difference where it really matters. And, you’ll do it all while savoring a new and refreshing way of life.

Volunteer in Jamaica today and help save the world.

This program is currently not being promoted on Go Overseas by its provider. Check with Jamaica Volunteer Programs for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of this program.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

University of Cincinnati Program Review

I really enjoyed my experience! Being in Jamaica is incredible! I enjoyed Dunn's River, Living Like a Maroon, and Strawberry Hill. I really enjoyed interacting with the children and being able to spend time with them. They really bought joy to me and helped make this trip memorable for me.

What would you improve about this program?
One thing I would do is include all the costs of the excursions in the general fee for the trip. I felt like I was coming out of pocket a lot while down here. I would have preferred paying the money beforehand, instead of coming and using money that I could have used on souvenirs.

Service Trip in Jamaica

Overall, this experience was amazing. I had so much fun getting to see some attractions while also being able to volunteer in the community. I wish I could have worked more at the orphanage because I feel like I would be making a better impact there.

University of Cincinnati Program Review

The experience with Jamaica Volunteer Programs was a terrific one. The excursions that were planned for us were solid cultural immersions that allowed us to quickly understand and feel connected to the Jamaican culture. We went to Dunn's River Falls, the Maroon village in Charles Town, and to Strawberry Hill and Creighton Estate. These excursions allowed us to see Jamaica in a broad view. For the volunteering aspect of our trip, we were in primary schools and a Salvation Army orphanage. Working with the children for four days was incredible because it allowed us to see and experience the school system and interact directly with Jamaican culture.

What would you improve about this program?
Provide a more detailed cost breakdown so that volunteers know where their money is going. Additionally, allow for more permanent projects so that volunteers can physically see the difference they are making in the Jamaican community.

University of Cincinnati Review

The week we spent with JVP was an incredible, eye opening experience. The culture was rich and we got to experience so much in a short amount of time. I know we all wished we had gotten to spend even more time at the orphanage, and even perhaps interacting more with the raw culture. But this was a wonderful experience and Jamaica can expect us back!

What would you improve about this program?
I would make sure the costs were laid out more clearly. This program was very action packed with many cultural trips (that we loved!) but the little costs such as admission fees and meals for lunches left some of us short for cash...

Appalachian State

I enjoyed everything about my time here in Jamaica and in staying at Smokey Manor. The staff were very helpful in keeping us safe at the Manor and out in the community. They also did a good job of helping us stay on schedule and and adjusting things as needed. They accommodations were also very nice and the food tasty!

JVP Review - AppState

I was on a week long service program with Appalachian State University through Jamaica Volunteer Programs. On this I experienced the amazing culture of Jamaica and got to do service in local schools and orphanages. Through this process JVP has been helpful and supportive in helping our program be successful and helping us to achieve all of our goals.

What would you improve about this program?
There is always issues with scheduling and communication, my only improvement would be to streamline the communication process before arrival just to triple check everything. That being said, everything ran very smoothly.

Appalachian State University

This program was overall wonderful. The students and teachers at the schools as well as the kids at the orphanage were so sweet and kind. However, I feel like in order to have a greater impact for the participants of this program there should be much fewer surveys and that everyone involved (including teacher and students as well as participants) should be aware and okay with interviews, photos and videos. I feel like all of this made a negative impact on everyone involved and it felt phony. We worked hard to create relationships with our children and teachers, and I know that you all worked hard to help form and secure those relationships, but I feel like those bonds were weakened throughout the week with the interviews, pictures, and constant photography. All-in-all we had a great experience.

What would you improve about this program?
Mentioned in the above comments.
