Grenoble was the best!

I loved studying abroad with CEA CAPA in Grenoble. I always felt highly supported by the onsite staff, they were very responsive to all of my questions about academics, housing, and local activity suggestions. The staff were great resources for learning how to immerse ourselves in the local culture. I also loved the excursions that we went on, it was a really great opportunity to engage in experiences I otherwise would not have had access to. Grenoble was amazing and I would highly recommend this program!

My experience in the French Language Program in Grenoble, France

When I first looked into studying abroad, I had never even heard of Grenoble. But after doing some research, I realized it would actually be a great place to start my time in France. It's a smaller city, which made it much easier to learn how to get around and ease into daily life in France before navigating bigger cities like Paris on my own time.

From day one, I felt supported by the program. We started with an orientation that covered everything from course info to safety tips and how to get around on the tram system. Getting our tram passes and learning how to navigate the city right away helped me feel way more at ease. The program coordinator, Brie, and her team were also amazing. They created such a welcoming environment and were always there to help or just make sure we were having a good time.

I was in the intensive French language program taking courses at the B1 level, so we had four hours of class each morning, with about a 30-minute break in between where we could either head to the cafeteria and grab a quick meal like quiche (or a chocolate croissant) or walk to a nearby restaurant. Our afternoons were usually free, which gave us time to explore Grenoble, but the program also planned lots of community engagement activities to spend time with the locals, especially during the first two weeks. We also went on some fun outings! One of my favorites was taking the cable car up to the Bastille for a panoramic view of the city and also when we went up to Mont-Blanc to see the snowy mountains in June.

This program gave me the chance to improve my French and meet some great people. If you're thinking about studying abroad in France, Grenoble is such a special place to do it!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The 17th century, Château de Vizille hands-down. It was my first time seeing a castle in real life but it's also a museum of the the French Revolution! Even the landscape surrounding it was so beautiful.
Pros
  • Community engagement with locals
  • The food!
  • Travel opportunities outside courses & program activities
Cons
  • The heat! Be prepared to buy a fan, or a couple.
  • Strikes sometimes shut down public transportation
  • Closest airport is an hour away

Sustainability and French In Grenoble France

It was my first time in France and I can say I honestly loved it. Grenoble was very beautiful and very community friendly. I loved how accessible the city is. Public transportation take you everywhere and I loved that. I loved that there was a lot to do outside the program like hike up the bastille alongside the many different museums. I was inspired by how Grenoble integrates nature into daily life, with mountains always in view and green spaces through the city. The food was always fresh and preservative free. It showed me that sustainability is cultural, it was made to be apart of everyday life in Grenoble, which pushes me to want to start bringing that to my community.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried raw sushi for the first time alongside oysters
Pros
  • Green innovation and lifestyle
  • Natural environment
  • Cultural exposure
Cons
  • Different pace of life
  • The time gaps of restaurants

Studying Abroad as a First-generation Student

This was my first time ever going to France and did not know what to expect. CEA CAPA allowed the option of airport pickup and this was one of the best decisions. Justine greeted me at the airport where we took a bus ride back to Grenoble. I feel all the things I was nervous about, taking public transportation, guiding myself around the city, was all taken care of through CEA CAPA. Brie and Justine even showed me how to re-load my card for taking the tram to travel around the city. I feel the attention to detail to smaller aspects like this is what made me feel comfortable in an unknown place. The location of housing was also great since it was only a 5 minute walk from my University. The school that I attended was highly competitive and much stricter with their attendance policy than in the U.S.A. so just beware of that when studying abroad. Overall, I feel this program was a great fit , the city of Grenoble is medium population size and has amazing business and schools of sciences.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to not be afraid to get lost. Explore on your free time. Since there are many small businesses some may not be discoverable on maps. I feel going to local areas like these helped improve my French by practicing everyday conversation.
Pros
  • Long-lasting friendships
  • Great food
  • Resume Builder
Cons
  • Independent time on excursions could be longer
  • Safety
  • Some individuals in the group behavior was unconventional.

Being a student at UGA

Over the Fall 2024 semester, I went abroad as a science student at the Université Grenoble Alpes. One thing I loved about this experience was how I was integrated with the students of UGA. My Cell Biology class was a great way for me to meet locals. The program I was in also had a buddy program. Over the semester, I would do fun things with my buddy and they showed me around the city and places that the locals go to. This really helped me find a sense of community in a place so new and helped me transition to my life abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To future travelers on this program, Grenoble is a very outdoor heavy city. However, as someone who does not love the outdoors, that does not mean you will not fit in. There are so many things to do in Grenoble, it might just take some looking for it.
Pros
  • It is affordable for students
  • Not a lot of tourists
  • Skiing in the Alps!
Cons
  • Because of its location, it is not the easiest to travel around
  • Very small city
  • The tram line is always disrupted (can not rely on public transport)

My experience in Grenoble, France

My time in Grenoble was unforgettable. I chose the city mostly just because I had heard of it before, but I found that being in a smaller place, in a more underrepresented region of France was incredibly enriching. Surrounded by the Alps, in a beautiful region of France, I got to explore with CEA CAPA and practice my French at the same time. The locals were so welcoming, and while the academics were not the easiest part, I felt incredibly supported by my CEA team. I made lifelong friendships with the people in my cohort, and I am so grateful that I chose this program.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
For me, the most nerve-racking moment was arriving. The first time I was left alone in my room and I realized I was alone in another country was super scary! It can be a lot for your mind to absorb this new experience, especially at first. However, the next morning, as soon as I stepped out of my room and then got to explore the city with my CEA group, I felt that fear disappear. I was able to seek comfort in new ways and adjust to new routines.
Pros
  • Fun excursions
  • Great social opportunities
Cons
  • Extremely rigorous schooling

Grenoble Engineering Study Abroad Program

My time abroad in Grenoble was with all certainty a highlight of my life. The experiences I had there learning about the local culture, studying at a high level, exploring the city and the alps, eating delicious food, and travelling beyond the city limits are those that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I grew significantly as a person abroad, facilitated by the support that CEA CAPA provides and simply becoming embedded into such a unique and limitless new world. Grenoble's central location within Europe as well as the developed transportation system allowed for further travels throughout the rest of Europe with incredible ease. I would highly recommend this program to anyone, especially those who are intrigued by nature, good food, travelling, and French culture.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
To be completely honest, the most shocking thing I saw was something I saw only a half hour after I landed while traveling to Grenoble, and continued to see every day for the rest of my time abroad: the alps themselves. The French rolling countryside is broken abruptly by some of the largest and most beautiful mountains you will ever see, and they are viewable out the window and just a short distance away no matter where you are in the city. Their snow caps pop out from behind the buildings while in the city, and when you take the transit to the local universities you get to see a 360 degree view of three of them. Simply seeing them is something that I hope everyone can have a chance to see at one point in their lives.
Pros
  • Travel Opportunities / Location
  • Great Food
  • Exposure to Unique Cultures
Cons
  • Safety of the city
  • Attitudes of locals

Grenoble Engineering Program

The CEA CAPA provided me with one of the greatest five months of my entire life because of everything they had to offer with my program, including visits to famous sites, trips to museums, and excursions to other cities. They also had such an amazing support system when it came to helping make sure we were all accommodated and satisfied with our experience throughout the semester. Moreover, the academic uniqueness of European culture made the experience all the more special because it provided an extensive hands-on approach to learning that put a fun twist on higher education.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The first day I was in France I had kangaroo, which I never knew was even available there, and it turns out that I had an allergic reaction to it the next morning. Moreover, I was headed to Geneva for a trip that morning, so I wore sunglasses on an overcast day to cover up the puffiness of my eyes from the reaction.
Pros
  • Opportunities to travel
  • Transportation throughout the city
  • Exposure to different culture
Cons
  • Safety of the area around housing
  • Housing fairness (appliances)
  • Not enough language exposure academically
