About Program

In the last two decades, the population of Ecuador has doubled, creating a growing population of abandoned children. Most of these children are from poor and/or indigenous families. Growing poverty, lack of education and limited governmental resources further exacerbate the problem of street children and orphans in Ecuador. In the capital city of Quito, our local partners have instituted an orphanage to protect the life of these vulnerable kids from further exploitation and potential homelessness. However, this project is in need of volunteers who are willing to share their time, efforts, skill, and love for the good of these abandoned children.

In the Ecuador Orphanage Project, volunteers will help the underprivileged children of the orphanage by teaching basic English or Spanish. Volunteers will help by feeding, caring for, and simply playing with these very young children. Ecuador Volunteers also help in developing creative programs art, music, dance, sports, etc.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Yes, I recommend this program

Teaching English in Ecuador

My experience in Ecuador was amazing. I was able to meet the most interesting and caring people. During the week, I felt comfortable and happy to be teaching in the orphanages. The staffs were friendly and welcoming; I was able to choose what classes I wanted to teach and which age of children I would work best with. I was happy to develop a relationship with the teachers as well as the children there. I enjoyed being able to see what it is like to live in a different culture and meet the people around me. I always felt like I was taken care of. I am so glad that I was able to take weekend trips to visit the other parts of Ecuador and see the beauty it has to offer. I saw some of the most amazing sights and breathtaking places. I would recommend a trip like this to anyone and please know that you will have a memorable experience- that will change you.

What would you improve about this program?
All in all the entire program was very fulfilling. If asked, I would definitely say that it would have been more fulfilling if I was given a chance to stay at the orphanage itself.
