Best Decision of My Life!

Deciding to go to Costa Rica with ISV was literally one of the best decisions of my life. I am 21, and have never traveled outside of the United States. I was traveling alone, not knowing anyone, and I was scared out of my mind. But literally right when I got there, I felt SO at home. The ISV workers are so welcoming and kind and make you feel so comfortable right away. The environment is one of my passions, so naturally going to Costa Rica has always been high on my list. I never imagined what I was actually in for though, IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. I felt like I was living a dream for 2 weeks. Don't get me wrong, the volunteer work is HARD. But it is so rewarding, you leave the forest every day feeling tired, but SO SO fulfilled. The families are so kind and loving, and you literally can experience a completely new culture "hands-on". I think my favorite part of the whole experience was the combination of the beautiful forests and working to keep them beautiful along with making life long friends and memories. Costa Rica will forever hold a special place in my heart and I am so thankful for a organization like ISV.

ISV 2016

My experience with ISV has changed my life. Although it sounds cheesy and cliche, I truly mean it. I learned so much about the importance of living sustainably, and how to properly apply that to my lifestyle. I had never actually been educated on conservation until I went to Australia. Not only was the learning experience amazing, the people I met have all become lifelong friends, that I will always share this experience with. I learned to push myself in multiple ways, like having to come out of my comfort zone to meet and live with 50 total strangers, and convincing myself to jump out of a plane 14,000 feet in the air. My life will forever be changed because of ISV.

Rewarding in Every Aspect

I went into this trip knowing it was going to be a blast. Little did I know that I would find myself along the way. I spent two weeks volunteering at Ran Tong Elephant Sanctuary where I learned not only about Asian elephants but about how an individual can make a difference. I found a new family at Ran Tong between the other volunteers and the workers/locals. I grew as an individual in more ways than one. Volunteering abroad with ISV was the best choice I could have made.

What would you improve about this program?
More learning opportunities for volunteer to learn more about the host country.

Getting volunteers in touch with alumni so they can ask questions about what to bring/expect.

Amazing Volunteer Work & Activities- Just go for it!

Prior to leaving for my trip to the DR, my roommate and I were concerned about the disorganization of ISV. I can't remember all the exact details, but I got a lot of emails that had incorrect information or there was incorrect information online while filling out forms. It happened a lot of times, but if I called ISV (which I did a lot) they were super helpful and got everything sorted out. Also, there is some weird rule about packing only 40 pounds or something like that. I asked ISV, and they said that was because the DR only wanted the bags you bring in to weigh 40 pounds. Anyways, my bag weighed 50 pounds and it was fine. I brought a bit too much probably- a bag with my stuff in it, a bag with donations, and then my backpack. I should have brought more athletic gear and less clothing for the adventure tour. Also definitely bring more than one towel. Just be patient with the organization if there is some mess-ups, everything runs smoothly once you actually make it to the DR.
My roommate and I (we went together) flew off to the DR without knowing exactly what to expect (even though we'd read everything), but as soon as we got there everything came together. Our project leader, Danyi, was super helpful and on top of everything. We worked with Rancho Campeche, and stayed in their facilities during our volunteer work for the first two weeks. The volunteer project was great. Our group was a group of 12 and we split into groups of 6. One group would do construction work and the other the summer camp for the kids, and then the groups would swap the next day.
Our first bit of construction work was doing a cement floor for a family. The next part of the construction work was doing a mural for the community center ISV had built in previous years. A lot of members of my group (myself included) would have much preferred to do another floor for another family, as that was what we were supposed to do originally. We felt like that was a lot more meaningful. However, Rancho Campeche (the program we were partnering with) wanted us to do the mural, as we had used more cement than expected on the first floor we did.
The summer camp was amazing- I loved it so much! I went into the program knowing no Spanish at all. The kids taught me a lot! They are so loving and wonderful. I missed them so much once I left! We taught them some words in English each day and then did activities that had something to do with what we taught them. They were so excited to learn. The two weeks of volunteering flew by so fast- I wish I could have volunteered more! It was so bittersweet to leave Rancho Campeche.
The adventure tour was great as well. We did so many cool activities. You really get to see the whole country, and you learn SO much! You pick up so much language, culture and history with the volunteering and then continue learning into the adventure tour. I loved being immersed in the culture those first two weeks. I would definitely recommend this volunteer trip for anyone! First-time travelers or people that have been all over. It's a great experience, and I really hope to travel with ISV again!

What would you improve about this program?
I wish that we could have done the cement floor rather than the mural during the volunteer project. Since ISV was partnering with Rancho Campeche, though, we didn't have much control over it.

ISV Australia May 2016

I had been nervous to be living with all strangers for two weeks, I felt homesick as I was boarding my flight. But as soon as I hung out with everybody I felt really comfortable because everyone else was likeminded and cared about the cause. Not only did I form a bond with all these girls but I also became inspired. Sometimes I felt really alone about my efforts at making a change but ISV introduced me to people that are just as passionate as me. I also thought Australia was one of the most beautiful places I've been to. Not only that but the lack of a language barrier really helped with culture immersion

What would you improve about this program?
I think the cost is a little steep but I understand that that money funds all the excursions and volunteer efforts.

Kendra Wolf Costa Rica Review

Going to Costa Rica was the best experience of my life! It was my first time out of the country and I couldn't have asked for a better country to volunteer in. I was able to volunteer in the rainforest where I saw a new animal everyday and saw some of the best sunsets I've ever seen. After those two weeks I went on the adventure tour and I want to go back because I loved it so much! I got to go white water rafting, zip lining over the rainforest, and repelling down a 280ft waterfall! I made a lot of life long friends and can't wait to make more!

ISV South Africa Primary School Renovation

I had a really great experience with ISV hosting my South Africa trip. This was my first experience traveling abroad and I felt very safe and connected to the other student travelers. I learned SO much and went on so many local (not tourist) experiences. I am grateful that I found this program! My parents felt SO SAFE sending me overseas knowing that ISV has been working with students for years and years. It is a little pricey, but worth the cost!

What would you improve about this program?
more organized with responding to emails. While i was in SA, it was hard for my parents to make contact with ISV (but there WAS a huge time difference)

10/10 Would Recommend

It sounds cliche to say this experience changed my life, but that is exactly what you should know about this program. Nothing changes your perspective on life quite like living in the middle nowhere, sleeping in dung huts and living cut off from the world for two weeks. South Africa was everything we could have wanted, and ISV ensured that we got the experience we were looking for, while still making a difference.

In my story, I spent two weeks working on a reserve, assessing vegetation and game along with 10 new friends that very quickly became family. We woke up before dawn and watched the sun rise as we headed out to the reserve. We learned about the native wildlife, including birds, vegetation and game, allowing us to collect data that would be put toward the upkeep and assessment of the reserve. The work that we did was incredibly important to both the reserve management and the communities in the area. The work was extremely rewarding, knowing that this would otherwise be paid work, or not done at all, in an area of South Africa where spare money can be spent much more wisely on bettering the lives of the locals.
Apart from our volunteer work, we were able to experience Africa in a way that few travellers can. Our living arrangements, as I said, were handmade dung huts. We cooked all of our meals in cooking groups and finished our nights sitting around the fire, looking up at the milky way perfectly positioned in the sky. In our spare time, our leaders took us on game drives, to visit the neighbouring community, hiking, games, lectures, lessons, playing with the resident dogs/cats, reading in hammocks, drinking tea, journalling and basically enjoying every single second of our African adventure. It was paradise. And if you ask any of the group, 2 weeks was not enough! We could have lived there happily for much longer!
Our leaders were tremendous and saying goodbye at the end of the two weeks was so difficult! ISV does a fantastic job of selecting their leaders. Kirsty, Edward and Norman were all so easy to get along with, very educated in the area we were working in and loved sharing the experience with us. I miss them all!

The two or three weeks after the volunteer experience are optional, but I can guarantee you that if you opt out of the four or five week package you will forever regret it. It is one thing to experience South Africa from the comfort of our village, but don't pass up the opportunity to see Blyde Canyon, Kruger and the Big5, Swaziland culture, coral reefs, markets, mountains and so much more. The second two weeks allow you to extend the group of international best friends you leave with and see more of the beautiful continent we were lucky enough to visit. Again, our tour leader, Tasch, was amazing and was more of a friend to us than anything. And if four weeks doesn't seem like enough time (which I promise you, it is not!), a fifth week in Zambia and Botswana is also offered. I was lucky enough to spend all five weeks in paradise and highly recommend doing so. We camped out in Chobe National Park, lived in and explored an unreal Zambian city, met many locals, bungee jumped off of Victoria Falls Bridge, was swept away by Zambezi rapids and stood in the monsoon mist of Victoria Falls.

I can't say enough good about this experience and about ISV itself. Yes it was costly, an obvious concern for students paying for school fees as well, but it was worth every penny and has opened so many doors to future travelling, work and opportunities. Explaining my overseas adventure in a short review is no easy task, and most of what we saw and felt in South Africa cannot be explained until you jump on a plane and experience it for yourself. But for students that want to find out more about what it is like with ISV, I kept a blog of my stories and adventures and would love to share it with anyone that is considering this experience :

Please don't turn down the opportunity to make lifelong memories and friends!!

What would you improve about this program?
Yes cost is always an issue for students. Save! and fundraise! I did not fundraise and wish I would have.

From Tourist to Traveler

ISV provided this first-time lone international traveler with the opportunity of a lifetime. Throughout the program, I felt very safe. It was clear that ISV had put much time and consideration into the activities we did and tried very hard to accommodate our needs. I made friends with people I never would have met otherwise and despite our different backgrounds, ISV provided an environment where we could all feel comfortable with each other.
Throughout the program ISV encouraged us to become smart travelers over tourists and to respect and understand the environmental needs. As we got to the end of the trip I could tell I learned about the culture and the people enough that I felt comfortable enough to consider returning on my own at some point.
The volunteer project was extremely life changing. I will never forget the family I lived with and the impact I was able to make on the community. After the two weeks were up I had a greater appreciation for the accommodations and privileges we received during the second two weeks.

Native Nature Kaitoki project- Waimahae Marae

This trip changed my way of looking at the world. Living with a Maori family, keeping yourself warm by the fireplace, no wifi, lack of signal, a generator that forces us to have a candlelight breakfast. And then there's the Manuka trees we had to plant. Steep up the hills for the greater good. We did something special to restore the native bush in New Zealand- together. ISV projects provided us with responsible tourism knowlegde that changed our whole life during these four volunteer and adventure tour weeks. ISV. Thank you as.

What would you improve about this program?
There have been some minor things; nothing can go perfectly. But that is what made this trip so perfect. ISV provided us with all the information we needed and beyond. It's what you put into it that comes out. This way I can't even remember these minor things. It's really hard to improve a project that hardly needs any improvement. Although the first day of work was hard because we didn't expect such a terrain to work on-but isn't that what made it so good looking back now? It was a challenge we overcame. We set goals and we reached them far beyond our expectations.
