A Course for All Language Teachers

Despite the fact that I've been a teacher for more thaan four decades, there's always more to learn. While the class is primarily designed for ESL teachers, anyone who teaches a language can benefit. The online sessions focus on classroom instruction with some attention to theory. The weekly required graded assignments compel one to think about teaching practices. The workload is cumbersome, but the support is awesome.

CIEE TEFL Course: A Comprehensive and Challenging Online Experience

I took the CIEE TEFL 150-Hour Certification Course because it was required for me to obtain a position to teach English in the Czech Republic. Before I begin my review, it is important to note that I did not expect the course to be challenging. Rather, I thought that it would be a quick and easy online class meant to satisfy any concerns of school administrators regarding my ability to adequately teach the subject matter. I was incredibly wrong!

I was pleasantly surprised by how comprehensive the course was. It covered a good balance of theoretical and practical material, provided plenty of opportunities to engage with my tutor and classmates, and supplied a significant amount of content within each of the units that made up the weekly modules. Additionally, the 20-hour practicum was incredibly helpful because it provided me with some real-life teaching experience.

With this in mind, do note that the comprehensiveness of the course also made it challenging. If you are working a full-time job and taking this course, you will do little else other than those two things. There were typically five units in each weekly module (they included presentations of the material, discussion posts, and/or quizzes) that each usually took 2-3 hours to complete. In addition, there was a module written assignment due each week and an online web-conferencing tutorial session that was held every Tuesday. Thus, while the work was extremely valuable and never too difficult, the amount of it definitely kept me busy.

Overall, this was a phenomenal course! I was very much impressed by the program. It far exceeded my expectations and I would recommend not only it, but any of CIEE's programs to anyone looking to teach abroad!

What would you improve about this program?
The intensity of the program, specifically the large amount of required work, was often difficult when coupled with a full-time job. Thus, I would recommend that the program consider reducing the number of commitment hours that it requires each week or make the time commitment abundantly clear from the start.

CIEE TEFL

I took this class because I was offered a scholarship that gave an unbeatable price. I don’t have plans to teach right now but didn’t want to miss the opportunity to take this class because I know that it can open many doors!
The course material was manageable. I do wish that I had a better understanding of the time requirements in the beginning, however. The instruction was great and my course tutor was always available and very helpful.
I did my practicum in Costa Rica since I was already going there to visit family.
Overall this course was a good experience and I’m happy that I decided to take it!

CIEE TEFL Is the Way to Go!

I really enjoyed the TEFL certification course through CIEE. I thought there was a good balance between practical skills and theoretical learning. Also, the content was delivered in variety of ways, which supported all students and our various learning styles. It certainly was a time commitment, however well worth the time and money. I feel prepared and confident to teach abroad thanks to CIEE and their online TEFL certification course!

Good program and requires hard work

I really enjoy the CIEE TEFL 150-hour program. It is a 10 week (11 including the intro) well structured program, having roughly 5 course modules to learn and be assessed on each week as well as a weekly Graded assignment for each of the modules. These modules have accompanying discussions in order to provide your opinion and receive feedback from your peers and a weekly online meeting with your class and the tutor. This program requires lot of work which end up being an additional 10-15 hours per week, if you are able to properly use your time wisely and plan ahead you should be able to complete the program easily with a good grade. I highly recommend taking this TEFL class if you plan to teach abroad whether it is required or not. It covers teaching styles, teaching history, and much more that will aid in your teaching experience.

What would you improve about this program?
It is a little bit too strenuous time wise. There are about 7 graded assignments a week which is nice cause you get a chance to improve your grade, but there's so many its hard to find time to complete them all if you have a full time job or a are a student. There is a lot of work that is necessary to move on to the next lesson. It would be nice to move on without having to complete a discussion post, or mini assessment from the previous lesson.

Great value, excellent experience

My experience with CIEE TEFL certification was truly exceptional! I wanted to find a reputable, thorough, and rewarding TEFL course and CIEE went above and beyond any expectations. I completed the 150-hour course and learned so much about the world of teaching English - everything from practical teaching methodology, cultural aspects of teaching/learning, historical and current policies and perspectives around TEFL and much more. The practicum requirement makes this certificate stand out as well. The course was challenging and insightful and the CIEE staff will assist you the entire way through.

I recommend CIEE to anyone hoping to teach English in their home country or abroad!

CIEE TEFL

I thought this course was well laid out. The questions made me think, but were not too difficult that I couldn't find the answer. The teacher was available for questions almost any time. I never had to wait long to hear from her. She was very professional at all times. I felt that the time allowed to finish the modules was sufficient. I work with high school exchange students and this program really gave me an insight into what they have had to go through to be able to come to the United States. I'm so glad I took this course.

What would you improve about this program?
I really see no need for improvement in any way.

Value

I felt this experience was well-structured, but fell short in certain aspects. For students that are looking for a very in-depth look as ESL teaching and have time in their schedule for a 20-hour/week studies, this would be a good route. That being said, I felt like the job-guidance was lacking, the time commitment was disproportionate to the title, and though the professor was great, the online platform was very boring.

What would you improve about this program?
- Diversifying the way of portraying information (less power-points and 1990s cartoon-style talking heads)
- Provide a 1-on-1 meeting with the professor at the end of the course for this type of review

Questions & Answers

Great question! CIEE TEFL does not require a college degree to get certified so all of our programs would be a great fit. If you're looking for teaching placements without a degree, it varies by country. CIEE TEFL offers a teaching opportunity in Murcia, Spain where only a high school degree is required.

Hi Victor! Yes - as Joanna said, you are expected to find your own practicum in your area. I found it intimidating at first but it is actually a great way to prep you for the job hunt that is ahead of you. CIEE's list is a good starting point but don't limit yourself to it, I am sure you will find plenty of schools, non-profits that work with immigrants, churches, etc. in your area that will be...

Mostly yes. There is a weekly online meeting with your teacher, and you can select from a variety of appropriate times. Also, they want you to keep pace with the class, so that you'll do roughly one module per week. There is also a final date when the practicum is due. However you can do the course at your convenience, and whenever you have available time.
