What an incredible opportunity!

When I saw an ad a year ago on social media for this certification through CIEE, I was curious, though not sure if I would actually go through with it. As of now, I am awaiting my placement! The process was intimidating, but very easy to follow and the coordinators at CIEE are always available to help and lend support. Although I personally had a stressful application process, if everything is done on time to its full extent, it’s a breeze. I highly recommend trying this program for this unique experience!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would easily make sure I’m getting my paperwork completed on time and saving all documents to my computer. This not only will help in the future with reference to said documents, but save a lot of time and frustration when documents are delayed in the mail or lost elsewhere. The sooner the completion, the sooner (and more relieving) the procession of the applications and placement.

Supportive Staff and Helpful Material

CIEE's 150-hour TEFL Certification has helped me build confidence as a future teacher very close to my departure to go teach in Chile. The staff is very hands-on and my instructor is very supportive. The course-load is rigorous but not too difficult, and keeps you on your toes and prepares you well to teach abroad. I could not have asked for anything more from this course and I look forward to our weekly tutorial, which adds a nice human element to the online course. 10/10 would recommend this program!

Applicable

I think the TEFL course is very practical and relevant to possible situations an ESOL teacher can face. The grammatical side of the course covers all key topics and issues that are related to teaching them. Having a pedagogical education and some teaching experience from before, I find this course well structured and I think it is a good tool to refresh some pedagogical and methodological knowledge and skills. I firmly recommend to those who has no pedagogical education/experience and to those who has teaching knowledge from before, to consider TEFL course from CIEE as professional development or/and first step in teaching career.

CIEE TEFL prepared me to teach in Spain!

I took CIEE's TEFL class because I was planning to teach English in Spain through their program. I had no formal teaching or education background, and this course helped me feel much more comfortable coming into a teaching setting.
I felt that the weekly tutorials with a tutor and classmates were interesting and helpful. Discussing ideas with other fellow TEFL students allowed me to think of things I otherwise wouldn't have come up with. The information each week was, for the most part, quite helpful as well. In particular, I enjoyed the brief history of the English language, as it has been useful in explaining the differences between various English words and their roots. I have also been very grateful for the many activity ideas provided throughout the modules and have used many in my classroom already this year.

What would you improve about this program?
It would have been nice to have some more information specifically about teaching in Spain and how the culture of education is there.

One Fine Class

The TEFL program was a very nice tool for learning about different things to expect in a classroom. It opened up a conversation for scenarios that may take a new teacher by surprise. It also provided quite a few ideas on how to work quickly and go with the flow.

For someone, like myself, with very little teaching experience in a classroom, this course provided a good primer that others who studied Education may have received. I did not study Education so this course did help to give me an idea of what to expect in my own classroom.

While the online portion of the course was beneficial, the practicum really taught me quite a bit. The requirement of getting out and practicing in a classroom was very beneficial. I am happy this is required so that my first time in a classroom wasn't in front of 50 Thai children.

The CIEE TEFL course really was quite nice. The lectures were interesting enough, conversation with other coursemates and the teacher were insightful, and the practicum gave me confidence.

What would you improve about this program?
To improve this program I would offer an option to substitute part of the learning experience with an audio file so that information could be learned by listening in the car or on a run.

CIEE TEFL Review

The course covered a lot of ground, including pedagogical strategies, technical language content, and behavioral management suggestions. It made me think in advance of what style I should and could employ as a teacher, and got me excited for the program. I liked that their was a live component of the program, with the ability to interact with other students in the class. Receiving feedback on my work submissions also helped keep me on track and motivated. I thought that the quiz part of the program also helped motivate me to review the course material, and being able to re-take these quizzes allowed for some flexibility as well. The discussion groups were one of my favorite parts of the course, because I got to engage in conversation with people from all over the country and discuss our upcoming adventures.

What would you improve about this program?
I would have loved if some aspects of it could have been tailored more specifically to my program. For example, I taught abroad in the Czech Republic, and wished I'd had more knowledge of their academic style beforehand.

Very useful for those who wish to teach abroad

I enrolled in CIEE's TEFL course while I was teaching abroad in Spain. It was 130 online hours plus 20 practicum hours. Our group met weekly online to work on whatever project was needed that week. Our teacher was very helpful and guided us diligently. I got my TEFL certificate in two months and used that TEFL certificate to get a job teaching abroad in Chile. I highly recommend it for those who plan to teach English abroad. Many jobs require it and it shows us many good ESL/EFL teaching strategies.

CIEE's TEFL Course Offered Invaluable Preparation for Teaching Abroad

I began my TEFL course through CIEE in March 2019 while finishing up my last semester of undergrad, six months before leaving to teach abroad in Spain. I would recommend working ahead if possible; doing so helped me to balance my school work, job, and this course without feeling too overwhelmed.

The course offers amazing resources and modules that prepare you to teach with a diverse range of age levels and group sizes. I also gained insight about working with different cultural groups and was able to refresh my memory on grammar rules (something I hadn't realized I needed!). Since coming to Spain, I have utilized much of what I learned through the TEFL course with my students and in my private tutoring lessons.

My instructor was extremely helpful and accommodating. There were weekly video chat sessions that we had to attend, which I was unable to due to a conflicting work schedule, and she allowed me to watch the recorded sessions on my own time and take notes for credit. She also responded very quickly to all of my questions and messages, and I felt like she genuinely cared about my progress and success in the course.

There is a 20-hour practicum requirement, which initially felt daunting, but I ended up really enjoying my experience. I worked with adults at an ESL center and gained a lot of confidence in my abilities as a teacher. I think the practicum is a very unique part of the TEFL course and am glad that I had the opportunity to do it.

I would highly recommend the TEFL course, especially if you feel unsure about what teaching abroad really entails, because of how much more prepared I now feel in the classroom and in my tutoring sessions.

Questions & Answers

Great question! CIEE TEFL does not require a college degree to get certified so all of our programs would be a great fit. If you're looking for teaching placements without a degree, it varies by country. CIEE TEFL offers a teaching opportunity in Murcia, Spain where only a high school degree is required.

Hi Victor! Yes - as Joanna said, you are expected to find your own practicum in your area. I found it intimidating at first but it is actually a great way to prep you for the job hunt that is ahead of you. CIEE's list is a good starting point but don't limit yourself to it, I am sure you will find plenty of schools, non-profits that work with immigrants, churches, etc. in your area that will be...

Mostly yes. There is a weekly online meeting with your teacher, and you can select from a variety of appropriate times. Also, they want you to keep pace with the class, so that you'll do roughly one module per week. There is also a final date when the practicum is due. However you can do the course at your convenience, and whenever you have available time.
