Worth it!

Going through CIEE you do not get to decide where you are placed (although you do state where you would like to be placed). I was placed (with my best friend) in Khon Kaen , Thailand which is in the Issan region near Laos. I had never heard of this part of Thailand (it’s northern but nope not near chiang mai) and was definitely worried about what the year would hold. While where I live is untouched by tourism the people are WONDERFUL. I am definitely experiencing the real deal thailand. My job is so thankful for us to be there teaching English and make us feel so special and at home everyday. The salary allows me to travel every other weekend and I have been able to see A LOT of Thailand. CIEE does a great job of preparing you before your departure and I am forever grateful I went through them especially because of the week long orientation in Bangkok. It gave me time to make friends who would be teaching around Thailand, adjust to Thailand, and get prepared for the year of teaching ahead. While I am not living the beach, elephant life, I imagined I would be I am so thankful for where I am and the people I have met. I have been challenged and grown so much in my time in country and I have CIEE to thank.

What would you improve about this program?
I didn’t hear my placement until less than a month before leaving which was stressful at the time.

An Incredible Experience

Deciding to teach in Thailand through CIEE is by far the best decision I have made. CIEE’s staff ensures you feel comfortable and capable before, during, and and after your orientation - which makes taking a leap like this much less intimidating. The course prior to departure is super helpful. The orientation provided so much useful information and teaching tips as well as fun cultural activities. Orientation was a great time to make new friends and prepare for this exciting journey. I am so happy with my school, housing, and community. I have made great friends and countless memories already. Thailand is such a special place. I am so happy that I chose to live and work in a new country through CIEE. Everyday brings a new adventure! I highly reccomend this program!

TEACH IN THAILAND WITH CIEE

Teaching in Thailand has been the best experience especially going through CIEE! I was definitely nervous about moving to another country and starting a teaching job at a new school but CIEE made it as nerve free as they possibly could! Prior to departure they help you get comfortable with the program by providing you with live webinars, TEFL courses if needed, and personal support from your program coordinator! They place you at your school in Thailand and provide you with accommodations for the entire length of your stay! They even take care of the visa process for you, making the price of the program worth it, for all that is included! When you arrive in Thailand you get a week long orientation to help you feel even more prepared for your journey. No teaching experience? No worries, CIEE provides teaching courses throughout orientation as well as Thai language and culture crash courses! The best part about orientation? You get to meet so many people that are about to embark on the same journey as you. I met some lifelong friends and they’ve definitely made good travel buddies thus far too! Overall CIEE exceeded my expectations and made the adjustment to teaching in Thailand that much easier! Still not sure if it’s for you? Well that’s what a lot of us thought prior to coming here but I promise it’s a life changing experience you don’t want to miss!

Truly Making a Difference

Deciding to teach abroad has challenged me and made me grow into a better teacher and person. I came into this job expecting to teach English but I have found that this job is more about learning than teaching. I have learned that the Thai people are some of the most caring and loving people. I have learned that the Thai language is difficult to learn but gets better with practice. I have learned that lesson plans might not always work out the way you hope, but mai pen rai, it'll work out in the end. I have learned that Thailand has three seasons: Hot, Hotter and Hottest. I have learned that Pad Thai is always delicious and never gets old. I have learned that what we do as teachers truly makes an impact on our students' lives. I have learned that there is so much more to see and experience in the world, so take this opportunity to experience it for yourself- teach in Thailand!

What would you improve about this program?
It could be improved by preparing teachers for teaching more than just English. Many of us got classes like Math, Social Studies, Health, Art, etc and we had no clue on how to teach a subject we weren't prepared for. Training at orientation would have helped a lot of us feel more prepared when we started at our placements. Another idea for improving the program is preparing the teachers with all of the free resources and websites online. I taught in America therefore I have a lot of great websites for free lesson planning, class activities, games, worksheets, bulletin board ideas, score sheets, etc. It would benefit all teachers to have either a small training at orientation on the various sites to use or I could help create a list of all sites that have saved time for lesson planning.

Highly Recommend

Thanks to CIEE, I arrived in Thailand safely and with ease. Before leaving, they provided everything from the necessary information for obtaining the documents you need to informative pre-departure videos and links. Any question or concern I had was quickly answered. Both CIEE and OEG are easy to contact.

Once arriving in Thailand, both CIEE and OEG create a wonderful experience through their one week orientation, giving you the tools and resources to guide you into teaching and living in abroad. The dedication does not stop once you are at your school. I was easily able to contact them with an issue and they had even followed up making sure everything was okay!

I would absolutely highly recommend them as they made what seems like a different process incredibly smooth. You can honestly tell they care!

CIEE Cares About You

There are several reasons why I selected to teach through CIEE over the field and I continue to be pleasantly surprised by their service and support. CIEE has exceeded all of my expectations. They truly care about your well-being through the application process, predeparture, placement, and school semester.

The primary reason I applied through CIEE was the numerous benefits and accommodations their programs provide. The teach in Thailand program offered the opportunity to teach other subjects, 24/7 program support and assistance for the duration of your stay, orientation/training, and a social network of other participants all in the same circumstance. CIEE honestly cares about your placement preferences too, I know that it is difficult to satisfy everyone's requests but they did a great job with mine and I know fellow participants that were also extremely pleased.

CIEE also does their absolute best effort to prepare you for departure. From learning about cultural and classroom norms to visa assistance and online webinars. CIEE provided all the materials you could possibly need and the availability for specific concerns/questions is unmatched. I went into orientation with absolutely zero training or teaching experience. CIEE and OEG do a phenomenal job at making you feel comfortable in a classroom and give you the tools to be a successful teacher. I cannot stress enough how important orientation was, I would have been absolutely lost walking into a class on the first day without it.

Needless to say, Thailand is an absolutely gorgeous country with some of the kindest people on the globe. I have been easily able to balance my work/travel time and have had a couple hundred “once in a lifetime” experiences. CIEE teach in Thailand is unrivaled.

Don't wait take the leap!

My time teaching in Thailand has been one of the best experiences of my life! I was located in the small province of Phrae approximately 4 hours southeast of Chiang Mai. I was able to meet new friends in my town, find my love for all things teaching and travel to places that I had only dreamed of in the past. Phrae has become my home away from home.

CIEE and OEG are so supportive and ready to help with whatever comes your way. From beginning my application to the end of my school year they were always there offering advice and help along the way.

This program is unique in that it gives you a chance to see new places but build lifelong relationships with the people that live there. This is not simply an opportunity to travel, it is a relationship and experience builder that you will never regret. Take the leap, everything comes along the way. You will find strength you didn’t even know you had. I fell in love with the country and its wonderful people and have found the opportunity to work full time here. Thank you CIEE and OEG!

Teaching in Thailand

I decided to teach in Thailand with CIEE because I wanted to travel and immerse myself in a new culture while still pursuing my passion for education. It was not an easy choice to make, but leaving my teaching job at home for this experience was the best decision of my life! At orientation, I met amazing new friends who are now my travel buddies. We teach on the weekdays and travel to new places on the weekends. Thailand has so much to offer: beautiful beaches, delicious food, scenic mountains, and smiling people. Every day is a new adventure!

CIEE supports you throughout the entire program and provides travel insurance. They also provide housing which is so nice!! Orientation was so informative and everyone was so friendly. If you encounter any issues at your school you can count on CIEE to help you with communication barriers and misunderstandings! I highly recommend this program.

Questions & Answers

We currently provide the same level of visa support to all Teach in Thailand participants and only offer one program.

It varies depending on where your school placement is. Many teachers are in studio apartments in the same apartment complex as other foreign teachers. I've also heard of shared houses or apartments, always with your own room though!

Unfortunately due to the nature of this particular program you must sign up for either 6 months or a year. But there are plenty of other volunteer organizations that would be happy to have you come volunteer for two weeks!
