About Program

Spend a January, summer, semester or academic year in Salamanca with AIFS Abroad. Earn up to 18 credits studying at the University of Salamanca. Courses are taught in English or Spanish, with no previous Spanish language study required for most programs. Live in a homestay with three meals per day or, for an additional fee, select a student apartment with a meal allowance.

Choose from the following academic programs:

• Spanish Language and Culture Program (fall only)
• Optional Early Start Intensive Spanish Language and Culture Preparation Program (3 credits)

I had the most amazing semester. Salamanca, is the best city to study abroad and AIFS is a very reliable program. From the beginning to the end, our directors educated us and kept in constant communication to ensure our excellent safety and organization. They choose very secure, fun and immersing homestays. I absolutely loved my host family, they were so welcoming and always made the most delicious food! Having wireless internet was also an added bonus! I loved this program because they made it hassle-free. They handled our airport transfers and always let us know of cultural events on campus. I miss it like crazy, choose AIFS-Salamanca!

I loved studying abroad, especially in a place that my school didn't offer because I was forced to make new friends and get out of my comfort box, which is what studying abroad should be all about. I loved being in Europe as well because there are a million places you can get to so quickly.

Salamanca is a beautiful city that looks like it came straight out of a storybook. My university has a study abroad program in Salamanca, but I realized it was more affordable (and four weeks longer) to study through an external program. Before the semester started we had a two week orientation course which helped me to get acclimated to Salamanca, my study abroad group and Spanish culture. The AIFS staff is fantastic. The homestay was nice, I learned a ton about Spanish culture and we had several groups of European high school students live with us too. The classes were easy, but they are all in Spanish.

And AIFS has an optional excursion to Morocco which was amazing!
Overall, I would recommend study abroad, and if you're looking at Spain. Go to Salamanca with AIFS

I had the most wonderful experience in Salamanca, and would encourage anyone interested in the abroad experience to study here as well. My host family was incredible, giving me a taste of homemade paella, soups, dinners, meals--everything a girl could ask for! The two of Salamanca felt super safe, and even with us out walking at night, I never had any issue or felt unsafe. Also, its location to Madrid and thus out of country travel was extremely easy and accessible.

I couldn't recommend this abroad experience more!!!

Where do you stay during spring break?

Hi Michelle, I was in the program 8 years ago so please check with the AIFS staff in Salamanca. At that time, spring break was not covered so we all planned ahead. Some opted out for staying with their host families, all you had to do is check with them and pay an additional fee directly to them. What made this study abroad experience unique and special?

Marian Murphy Salamanca

Marian: During my time abroad, I had a really special chance to grow as a person. I had never traveled alone before, so it was a little scary initially, and I had no idea how much this time alone would impact me. I learned so much about Spain's culture and their language, spending each day wandering and discovering new historical sites.

I met so many amazing people that I will never forget for as long as I live--they truly all touched my life in a unique and special way. And finally, I learned about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses are, how to take things in, and how to be in the present moment. The whole experience changed me for the better.

How has this experience impacted you?

Marian: I'm not too sure what the future holds for me. I do know, however, that this experience has made me a more confident and resourceful person. I am not as stressed over the small things--whenever work seems to be too much I remember the times that I got lost in a city I've never been to or when I tried to communicate in countries where I had limited idea of the language. In addition, I had the unique opportunity to teach an English class at the local elementary school. I'm sure in the future, whatever my vocation ends up being, I will be able use the skills I discovered in the classroom from these wonderful children.

What did AIFS Salamanca do for you and what did you need to do on your own?

Marian: AIFS Study Abroad at the University of Salamanca was incredibly helpful! I honestly am not sure what I had to do by myself besides choosing my classes and attending them. Whenever I needed anything, they were there with tons of advice and support!

Describe your favorite must-have food that you tried abroad.

Marian: I really liked all the food I had in Italy. Although my last name is deceiving, I come from a very (loud) Italian family. It was amazing to go across the sea and experience my heritage. It almost felt like home!

Tell us about any interesting cultural tidbits you noticed about your country.

Marian: One thing I could not get used to was Spain's shoes/socks habits. I like being barefoot and I rarely wear socks, and that's a huge no-no over there. If I were walking around without shoes on in my hall, I would get looks and some people even asked if I was cold! And if I was wearing shoes and no socks with ballet flats, people would ask wear my socks were. It was funny to experience and something that I didn't really think of!
