This is a unique volunteering project in that your contribution as a volunteer is three-fold: your volunteering assists with construction and renovation tasks, your fees help to pay for materials, and the end product can then be used to host other important community projects. Volunteers help local building projects that would otherwise not be completed, lending time and funds to see them through to completion. Construction & Renovation

Animal Care in Cusco, Peru

I recently volunteered in Cusco, Peru though IVHQ and the Animal Care program offered. My experience was perfect from start to finish! I found the process of working with IVHQ to seamless. The local team in Peru was fantastic as well.
I worked for a week at a dog shelter and it was very special to me. I miss the dogs already and know that my work there made a difference to the local community.
My only complaint is that I didn't volunteer longer. I will definitely volunteer in a new location with IVHQ in the near future...already looking forward to it.

Organized, Welcoming, Amazing!

I volunteered in Cusco, Peru with Maximo Nivel on a healthcare project and everyone, from the program staff, the family I lived with for a week, and to the people at my volunteer placement, was soooooo kind and welcoming. The organization of the project was amazing -- so much was planned ahead or made super simple when I arrive so that I could truly just enjoy my time there without stressing about other things. They make it so easy to enjoy the volunteer work, other people, and the country. I recommend HIGHLY!

Cusco is Magical!

Our Cusco childcare program was amazing! From start to finish we always felt we had the support from IVHQ. Not only was working with the children and the owners of the daycare wonderful, Peru is a wonderful and magical place to visit! This was the second time I’ve volunteered with IVHQ, both times has been a great experience and I’m looking forward to going again next year. If you enjoy traveling this is a totally new experience and you should try it. You are given the opportunity to live and work with locals. You get to experience want it may be like to actually live there. Many times when traveling you only get to see what tourist see. IVHQ helps you through the process, making sure you are comfortable and safe. I can highly recommend IVHQ.

Best experience of my life!

What made my experience with IVHQ so great is definitely all the LOVE I felt during my whole trip. Love coming from the children I worked with, from my host family, the other volunteers I met during my stay who all shared my same mindset, etc. IVHQ made me remember the strong and independent woman that I always have been and they gave me all the tools needed to find myself again while also creating amazing and impactful change in the community. I always felt heard and seen by all the staff members and all my expectations, needs and desires were met one way or another.

Amazing Volunteer Trip to Cusco!

After no small amount of researching and deliberation, I decided on IVHQ to book my first volunteer experience abroad. I did not know anyone personally who had travelled with them, but the reviews were abundant. Price factored into the decision, as did the option to choose many cities across most continents.
All of my pre-trip interactions were conducted via email, but the option to speak to a representative was always on the table. The onboarding process was surprisingly simple and their checklists made submitting the requisite information a breeze.
Although I have traveled internationally several times, I had never been to South America. I chose Cusco, Peru for my destination, both for the Spanish immersion and a personal interest in Peru's history.
I have been a Registered Nurse for many years and enrolled in the medical volunteer program to maximize my positive impact while there.
Booking travel was easy through the Student Universe portal and I was able to include additional excursions through the local tour agency via the IVHQ links.
Frequent follow up emails kept me informed and engaged in the months and weeks leading up to my departure.
On arrival in Cusco I was picked up from the airport and brought directly to the local volunteer agency headquarters. I was greeted warmly, oriented and given a walking tour of Cusco's central district. The local agency had been given all of my pertinent information and I had no problems getting to my accomodations or starting my volunteer program.
Although my primary contacts in Peru were through the local agency, Maximo Nivel, my IVHQ program manager checked in with me every few days and was always available for questions.
The overall experience was incredible and I would not hesitate to book another volunteer experience through IVHQ. In fact, I'm looking forward to it!

Pros
  • Food
  • Accomodations
  • Friendly Staff
Cons
  • Very little information given on escalating political unrest in Peru

Teaching in Cusco

I taught EFL in Cusco for 1 week with my son who is 12. The local team, Maximo Nivel were excellent people to work with. Everything was organized, professional and they made it easy to settle into the experience. Traveling alone with my child I wanted to make sure I felt comfortable and safe and I couldn't have felt more so. Our teaching experience was just that; the organization and children we worked with were fun and engaged and they enjoyed learning from my son as well. Overall the entire experience was a great learning opportunity and travel memory to make. I am planning to volunteer with IVHQ again and would recommend IVHQ to anyone who wants their travel experience to be more wholesome and immersive beyond simple tourism.

Pros
  • Meeting new people
  • Supporting local community and children
  • Developing professional skills on a broader global scale

The best 3 weeks of my life

I spent 3 weeks in Peru this summer and it was the coolest experience of my life. I stayed in Lima and we traveled to a village called Pachacutec to do the volunteer work. I worked with so many amazing children. I met so many amazing people and worked with some of the sweetest, more caring kids ever. We also had a lot of free time to do things like explore the city and do weekend excursions. I went to Cusco and saw Machu Picchu, and I also went to Huacachina and went in a sand buggy and went belly sand boarding. I can’t wait to do more projects like this with IVHQ.

Pros
  • meeting so many people
  • affordable
  • valued work
Cons
  • culture shock
  • getting homesick
  • language barrier

Questions & Answers

Yeah! I actually got there earlier than the program started and went out in Lima on my own. During the program, yes we went out to different bars/discotecas. During the week, however, we had a curfew of 11pm.

There was a wide range of ages! I think you have to be 18 to do this program, and we had 18 year olds, people in their 20s, and we had one or two people in their late 20s/early 30s.

Yes, we can accommodate families on our volunteer programs and our local team can make arrangements to ensure you are accommodated and placed on a project together. To apply to volunteer abroad as a family, one person needs to complete the application process first and select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Will you be volunteering with a friend, family member or group?’ within the application form. Hi Laurie, according to the IVHQ website, "Volunteers in Lima are accommodated with other volunteers, in either avolunteer house run by a the local coordinator's family or in a homestay." "Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner)." I did an IVHQ program myself and both of those were included in the program.
