This is a unique volunteering project in that your contribution as a volunteer is three-fold: your volunteering assists with construction and renovation tasks, your fees help to pay for materials, and the end product can then be used to host other important community projects. Volunteers help local building projects that would otherwise not be completed, lending time and funds to see them through to completion. Construction & Renovation

Construction in Cusco

I loved volenteering in Cusco! I met so many new friends, immersed myself in a new culture, did some sight seeing, and helped a community out while doing so. I had never done construction before but I still felt useful and like my work made an impact thanks to the support from the field manager. Working was fun because I was surrounded by other volenteers who shared their stories. My home stay experience was the best. They made me feel at home with the best food, and clean and comfortable accommodations. I would recommend this project to anyone.

What would you improve about this program?
Tell volenteers in advance when they won’t have to work.

Cusco Peru

My five weeks in Cusco, were absolutely amazing. I loved waking up everyday to go and take care of a bunch loveable dogs. My host family was great and so were all of the friends I made along the way. Cusco is a great city for travel and adventures because it’s super close to Macchu Pichu, Montana de Colores and tons of cool Incan ruins and beautiful landscapes. Peru is a beautiful country with lots to offer make sure that you come with good outdoor shoes and an adventurous spirit 10/10 would recommend.

Knowledge and Experience Galore

I find myself in awe... with every new person I meet and new place I see. I’m overwhelmed by the grace I’ve been given. Lately it’s evident through Peruvians and fellow world travelers. I’ve accidentally fallen into a gracious stranger’s lap on the bus, had an adorable girl (in one of the poorest school districts in Pachacútec) offer me her snack, came home to clean sheets and been referred to as family by everyone. I’ve met such genuine, kind people who are full of love.

I’m thankful for my rambunctious housemates who’ve become family. I’m thankful for the unbound sea, broad mountains and restless sand dunes. I’m thankful for the quiet moments that I’ve had with Jesus. I’m thankful for the sweet kids who’ve let us practice medicine on them. They’ve taught me not only valuable medical skills, but also humorously improved my Spanish. I’ve seen Christ in so many different lights. This trip has been full of surreal memory-making moments. Yet it has taught me time and time again: life is about the little things.
So here I am blessed to be a little person; everyday I’m just trying to spread more love in this great, big world. If you’d like to hear some stories, please ask me about Peru! “Traveling is an investment that makes us feel alive.”

What would you improve about this program?
The medical program could use a partnership with a doctor and set schedules every week.

Special Needs Care-Cusco

This was my first time traveling abroad alone as well as participation in a volunteering program. From the start of my journey to the end, IVHQ made me feel very welcome and safe and were very organized. From the airport transfer to the orientation, the home stay and the volunteering program itself, they had my back. IVHQ uses Maximo Nivel in Peru and the entire staff were there to answer my questions, gave me advice for reasonable taxi services and taught me Spanish through the Spanish lessons they offer. My Spanish teacher was very good. I knew where to book my weekend travels and met very nice people along the way. As an older traveler (51) I felt right at home and connected with like minded individuals. The children at the home I worked at were beautiful and taught me so much about the simplicity of life itself with their smiles and joy to see me. I highly recommend IVHQ and plan to volunteer again in another country. Sincerely, Makana Busher

Special Needs Care in Lima - IVHQ

I loved working with the mamas in the orphanages, they are so sweet and welcoming. As someone who doesn’t know Spanish either, everyone in the program was so helpful and supportive. Getting to experience what it is like to be in an unfamiliar place with a language I don’t know was valuable to me so that in the future I can better understand migrant kids that I would like to work with in schools. I feel more empathetic and understanding than ever before.

The local staff was so helpful providing guidance with different places to visit in and around Lima. I went in a dune buggy, paraglide, and hiked a 4600 meter high mountain, all things I had done for the first time. I really got out of my comfort zone. Plus, the local staff’s responses were timely and they checked in with us often too so I always felt supported. I felt very safe and cared for with them. And the host families are so wonderful too! The food and hospitality made me feel welcomed and right at home.

What would you improve about this program?
More detail at orientation about the different programs you could choose while there. Otherwise it really was a good program.

Childcare/Special Needs

Volunteering in Lima was a life changing experience. I know this is the cliqué thing to say, but it honestly did change my life. Volunteering allows you to remember, in case you've forgotten, how lucky you are. Others are much more unfortunate than you are. Being able to give your time and effort to help others is so full filling and life enhancing. I feel in love with helping others, and now, even being back home, I´ll continue to volunteer with kids with special needs and I´ll never stop doing it. IVHQ provided me with much more than just a volunteering program. Volunteering with IVHQ is an amazing experience because they link you with a honest and reliable local organization. People from all over the world come to volunteer and because of this you will be able to make the best friendships ever. You might just know some people for a few weeks and still make friendships to last a life time. I volunteered for 2 months and loved it! I would really recommend this amazing experience for anyone who's willing to go out of their comfort zone and whose ready to help others! do it, you won't regret it.

What would you improve about this program?
I really think that the local team is completely amazing. All of the coordinators are extraordinary. They made my program as good as it could get. I would say that if you are more of a long term volunteer (more than just a few weeks), staying 6 weeks is the perfect amount. It's not too little and not too much either.

IVHQ jungle conservation, cusco

Had a really amazing experience living in jungle, met some lovely people, did some really cool treks into jungle, mammal monitoring, caiman monitoring, harvesting orchids etc. The Panthera reserve is really beautiful, especially at sunset! Couldn't recommend IVHQ highly enough- the staff were always so helpful before/during/after the trip and the other volunteers were also really great! Lots of friendly monkeys around the place too!

What would you improve about this program?
Would love a bit more emphasis on planting trees etc and not as much clearing invasive species etc.

Medical Project in Cusco, Peru

I recently came back from volunteering on a medical project in Cusco, Peru. Partnering with Maximo Nivel, I volunteered at a small clinic called Centro de Salud Dignidad Nacional doing a variety of tasks. I got to work closely with the chief of medicine there as well as rotate with other doctors and nurses. I honestly loved every second of this experience.

I became extremely close to the clinic staff there, so much so that they invited me to parade with them during their annual Inti Raymi festival. We still keep in touch and I am currently making plans to return in December! Cusco is a magical place full of history and kindness. You will definitely find adventure here! So much to do, especially in the month of June.

What would you improve about this program?
This program is fantastic! Definitely remember to bring gloves, masks, and stethoscope. Venture out of your comfort zone and explore the surrounding areas of Cusco.

One thing that could be improved is the volunteer domicile placement. My home stay was pretty far from the plaza and my clinic placement, but the host family was incredible! Just wish it was a bit closer to better enjoy the plaza and nightlife.

Questions & Answers

Yeah! I actually got there earlier than the program started and went out in Lima on my own. During the program, yes we went out to different bars/discotecas. During the week, however, we had a curfew of 11pm.

There was a wide range of ages! I think you have to be 18 to do this program, and we had 18 year olds, people in their 20s, and we had one or two people in their late 20s/early 30s.

Yes, we can accommodate families on our volunteer programs and our local team can make arrangements to ensure you are accommodated and placed on a project together. To apply to volunteer abroad as a family, one person needs to complete the application process first and select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Will you be volunteering with a friend, family member or group?’ within the application form. Hi Laurie, according to the IVHQ website, "Volunteers in Lima are accommodated with other volunteers, in either avolunteer house run by a the local coordinator's family or in a homestay." "Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner)." I did an IVHQ program myself and both of those were included in the program.
