Is it smarter/cheaper to pack a lot now for teaching in China? Or should I wait to buy clothes when I get there?

Answer

It's smarter to pack light when traveling overseas. You have to lug all that stuff around, and a lot of it you'll find you don't even need. Pack for a few weeks then buy the other things you need when you need them (unless you think you'll have trouble finding something in China, whether it be certain clothing items that fit properly-like shoes-or other items).

For clothes and shoes, most of these items are actually MORE expensive than they are in the US unless you're buying really cheap things at a bargaining market. If you're moving to China, I would suggest bringing all of the main items you'll need for the year, and if you really need something you can pick it up at H&M. As for bags, I love to buy cheap ones at bargaining markets in bigger cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Towels and toiletries etc. can all be found in China. I would just recommend bringing tampons, deodorant, and moisturizer or any specialized hair products from home.

Hi Rebecca!
Depending on where you are traveling to in China, chances are you can find almost everything you need where you're going. If not in your certain area, Shanghai and Beijing (as well as other cities across China) will have larger stores where you can purchase whatever you need!
If you wear a shoe over the size of women's 9, that can be hard to find (same goes for if you are tall, pants might be difficult to purchase in "long" size).
Echoing Richelle - feminine products, deodorant, and over the counter ibuprofen (Advil, Tylenol) are impossible to find. Vitamins and name brand products are available, but very expensive! If you have a certain product or vitamin you don't want to live without - bring it!

Hope this helps!!
