Hi Gabrielle,

The answer to this question will depend very much on your individual preferences, study abroad location and what you want to get out of your study abroad experience. If you're going to a country that speaks another language and you want to improve your language abilities, living with a local family through a homestay or in a dorm/shared housing with other local students is one of the best ways to do that. Dorms are also great for making friends if you're worried about having a social life while you're abroad. Apartments can be a great option if you're more independent, are living with a partner or children or really want to have your own living space, but you do lose out on some opportunities to live and speak with locals if you're on your own.

Most study abroad programs will offer assistance with housing placements in homestays or dorms, but you're often on your own if you choose to live in an apartment, so keep in mind that option entails a little more work on your part.
