Is it better to study abroad during the fall or spring semester?

Answer

Hi Jordan,

This is really going to depend on how studying abroad fits into your major requirements and course of study. If you already know you'll need to take some classes at your university that are only offered in the spring semester, for example, then it probably makes more sense for you to study abroad in the fall.

Generally, it seems like fall is a little more popular than spring for study abroad, but you should make the decision that works best for you and your academic (or other) goals. Personally, I chose to study abroad in the spring because there were some classes I wanted to take in the fall, and because it ended up saving me thousands of dollars in tuition costs (my home university was on the quarter system, so I only had to pay for one semester instead of two quarters).

If it's really hard for you to decide, you can always look at what the climate is like during each season in the location where you want to study. If you don't do well with heat, then maybe it would make more sense for you to avoid the summer months, or head somewhere snowy if you want to enjoy the ski season!
