How will I know if my credits will transfer?

Answer

Hi Ethan,

You can talk to both your study abroad office at your home university as well as your study abroad program provider to make sure you're registering for courses that have transferrable credits. If you're enrolling though a program provider, you'll often just get credits for passing the program as a whole, so you won't have to worry about specific courses, and the in-country staff can help advise you to ensure you're enrolling in approved courses.

If you're enrolling directly at university without going through a program provider, then you'll have to do a little more work to make sure the credits you earn will transfer back home. Typically, what you'll need to do is send the course descriptions, syllabi and any other requested information to the study abroad office at your home university and your academic advisor, major director or whoever else is in charge of making sure you graduate with a degree, so they can determine if the courses meet their standards. This is especially important if you want any of your classes abroad to count toward required coursework back at home, so you should plan to start communicating with your study abroad office about courses well before registration actually begins.
