How do you deal with homesickness?

Answer

Don't let homesickness stop you from going overseas! It is a totally natural feeling that almost all people who go abroad for a long period of time will feel. Spend time talking to friends and family back home on Skype but also get out there in your new city and make new friends. Remember that nothing lasts forever so take advantage of where you are right now and see and learn as much as you can.

Do some research to find any clubs and activities that you would be interested in. Meeting new people often leads to great opportunities for travel, exploring and just hanging out. Maybe there's something you would be interested in volunteering in as well? If you feel homesick then get out and do something, staying in only makes it harder. Also, there's probably going to be other exchange students you could talk to, they probably know how it's like :)

Homesickness is simply a fact of life when you are abroad for long periods at a time, as irrespective of geographic proximity a different country will have different cultural values and customs. These can seem small at first, but can also become a constant reminder that you are away from home.

As has already been mentioned in the comments above, it is important to get involved with activities, which, perhaps, you would not otherwise do if you were at home. Studying abroad is truly the time for you to be out of your comfort zone and allow yourself to come out of your shell to work on your self-improvement.

MundoLengua (a language school based in Seville, Spain) has a lot of experience in dealing with students dealing with homesickness, particularly students from further-a-field like the US. Our theory is to normalize the local culture as quickly as possible. We do this by providing top-quality orientation services to your new surroundings. These do not just include a quick tour around the city, but also a complementary introduction to the food you will be eating here as well. Finally, on our programs students are shown artistic elements of the Spanish culture, such as Flamenco, salsa etc.

Students soon feel accustomed to local habits, such as going out and eating tapas; this, in turn, makes them just that little less homesick.
