A small backpack is best -- especially if you're studying in Europe and might be taking flights on RyanAir. They're super strict about their luggage policies and will charge you for every little additional thing!!
I agree anything you can fit either under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Plus you have to be comfortable walking longer distances with it potentially. So keep that in mind!
