What are the requirements for teaching abroad?

Answer

Hi Angela,

This is a bit of a tricky question, since the requirements are going to vary depending on your particular program, host country and even the school or provider with which you're going to be teaching. If you have a specific program or country in mind, look at the information about that program or country to see what particular requirements it might have.

Generally, most teaching abroad programs look for people with at least a bachelor's degree (not necessarily in education, although private and international schools often prefer an education degree) and some teaching experience. If you're going to be teaching English, many providers or countries expect you to have TEFL certification and might want to see that you have a certain number of teaching hours or prior experience teaching English language learners.

Hi Angela,

If you have a country in mind you're most interested in - you should check specific requirements for that country, as it does vary! It can even vary from school to school within that country, so it is important to do some research!

Generally speaking, you need a bachelor’s degree in any subject, native English skills, and a passport and citizenship from the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England or Ireland.

Some programs have additional requirements including TEFL certification, age restrictions, or language skills.

Hope this helps!
