Alumni Spotlight: Jean Kubala

Day care in Peru

Why did you decide to volunteer with Global Volunteers in Peru?

Jean: I decided to volunteer with Global Volunteers in Peru because my five previous GV trips had given me a chance to see different ways of living, and I was especially interested in young children.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Jean: My day-to-day activities involved mornings helping the single employee in a pre-school "crib" dress, change, feed, amuse, hug and generally care for ten toddlers between two and four years old - some of whom had develpmental problems. In the afternoons I helped older children with English and arithmetic, hung out laundry and sometimes read bedtime stories to the six-year-olds.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Jean: I am more aware of the strong need choldren have to be noticed - to feel special, and have observed it in my own grandchildren.
