Alumni Spotlight: Natalie Ball

Why did you decide to volunteer with Rustic Pathways in Costa Rica?

Natalie: Costa Rica with Rustic Pathways was the first program I ever went on. I chose it because it had a great balance of everything I loved and wanted to experience. First off, I did the Traveling Soccer and Service because I love soccer and wanted to have a service component. The trip also had an adventure component to it such as: white water rafting, zip lining, hot springs and more. The program also offered home stays which was something I really wanted to experience especially since I was studying spanish in high school. In all, I felt the program offered an amazing balance of service, relaxation, soccer, home stays and adventure.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Natalie: My activities varied since we were the "Traveling Soccer and Service" group. Activities included: service work in schools, working with kids, painting, restoring schools and adventurous activities like: white water rafting, zip lining, hot springs, volcano hiking, surf camp and so on. For the soccer component, we played against locals in organized matches as well as pick up. It was so much fun and a really fun way to communicate with the locals. We also got to relax on the beach, play beach soccer, go out to dinner to delicious restaurants, and other fun things.

How has this experience helped you grow personally and professionally?

Natalie: Costa Rica was the beginning of all my adventures and opened the door to my passions in life: traveling, nursing and global health. I am so grateful for my time with Rustic Pathways and would do it again in a HEARTBEAT.
